The NYPD said a 30-year-old man has died and three others were injured after a driver lost control of his vehicle and drove off a southbound Bruckner Expressway embankment landing on the northbound lanes below.
On Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at approximately 11.48 p.m., police responded to a 911 call regarding a vehicle collision on the northbound Bruckner Expressway, south of Exit 7C, Country Club Road, in Pelham Bay.
“Upon arrival, police observed a 2009 BMW BMW 328 with extensive exterior damage and air bags deployed, and a Toyota Rav4 with front passenger side damage,” an NYPD official said. Three men were removed from the BMW and were transported by EMS to Jacobi Medical Center, where the 30-year-old male driver was pronounced deceased.
The other two occupants of the BMW, a 26-year-old man and a 37-year-old man, are both listed in stable condition with head and body trauma. The 51-year-old female driver, the sole occupant of the Toyota, sustained minor injuries and was also transported by EMS to Jacobi Medical Center in stable condition.
Police said, “A preliminary investigation determined that the 30-year-old operator [driver] of the BMW [had been] traveling southbound on the Bruckner Expressway when he lost control of the vehicle and drove off the elevated embankment at the location.” This resulted in the vehicle landing on the northbound lanes of travel below, where it collided with the Toyota, which was traveling northbound. The NYPD Highway Collision Investigation Squad is investigating.
The deceased has been identified as Alwayne Hylton, 30, from the Wakefield section of The Bronx.
