Off to College, With Posse in Tow

For high school seniors, springtime brings more than showers and flowers — it brings college acceptance (or denial) letters. While many students anxiously await fat envelopes or fear the arrival of thin ones, there are some, like northwest Bronx resident Adolfo Abreu, who are already celebrating and plotting out future plans to put their education to work.

A Street Named Inspiration

The more Allison Richardson sees and hears about her mother Phyllis Reed’s impact — on the lives she touched and the community she loved — the more she feels guilty. Last week, thanks to the efforts of Councilman Fernando Cabrera, the city officially recognized local activist Phyllis Reed’s indelible impact by re-naming the corner of Davidson Avenue and Kingsbridge Road “Phyllis Ivonne Reed Plaza.” The signage hovers over Reed’s Armory plot like a guardian angel.

2010 Year in Review: Up-and-Coming Gustavo Rivera Defeats Espada

Gustavo Rivera, an adjunct politics professor and former political aide, took the Bronx political scene by storm this year when he defeated State Sen. Pedro Espada, Jr., for his seat in the 33rd District in the northwest Bronx. Rivera, a 34-year-old Kingsbridge Heights resident and former aide to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, beat out a number of other primary contenders in what quickly became one of the most watched and dramatic races in the state.
