The documentary Storm Lake, is premiering Monday, Nov. 15, on PBS’s Independent Lens. Watch the trailer here. Storm Lake, shortlisted for an IDA Award, highlights the plight of local journalism and why it continues to be essential during fractious and uncertain times, especially in small towns like Storm Lake, Iowa. From filmmakers Jerry Risius and Beth Levison, Storm Lake follows an acclaimed family-run paper in Iowa, headed up by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Art Cullen, struggling to keep the business alive and to keep citizens informed, as forces conspire to overwhelm their precarious small-town existence.
Risius and Levison had their cameras rolling throughout 2020, from the Iowa Caucus to the global COVID pandemic. In June 2020, Storm Lake became the COVID-19 epicenter of Iowa, making The Times’ reporting even more vital. Despite the setbacks, the financial losses, and even quarantine, the film documents the Cullens as they continue to deliver the news.

Tours, citizen science activities, and other events will provide opportunities to learn about the ecological importance of this historic old-growth forest.
Discover the Thain Family Forest. Meet at the entrance to the forest on Azalea Way. Themed discovery walks of the forest focus on its birds and natural history. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and seasonal attire for the weather. The beauty of the Forest can be appreciated in a new light during this one-hour walking tour. Expertly trained guides will present facts about the trees as well as the history, geology, and ecology of the Forest. For more information, go to https://www.nybg.org/garden/forest/.
Celebrate Native American Heritage Month: Native Americans Past to Present with NYC Parks on Saturday, Nov. 27, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. During Native American Heritage Month, explore the past and present experience of Native Americans. Urban Park Rangers will discuss how the Lenape used the area’s plants, wildlife, and waterways, as well as how their legacy continues to persist today in the Bronx and beyond.
Join a Family Fun Hike: Leaf Mandalas/Rangoli on Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. to noon for this even for 2 to 6-year-olds and their adult(s), led by a Van Cortlandt Park Alliance educator. Golds, reds, oranges and purples are all of the vibrant colors to be seen during the stroll on the next Family Hike. Come out and celebrate all of the beautiful colors of fall by creating your very own leaf Mandala/Rangoli. Rangoli or Mandala is an art form from India that uses repeating circular patterns on tabletops and floors. During the month of Diwali in Indian homes, Rangoli designs are used to decorate entrances to welcome in good luck and fortune to the family. So gather as many leaves during the walk as possible and get creative as the group explores the Northwest woods! The program will start at the southern end of the VCPA Garden & Compost Site at 10 a.m. Enter the park at Broadway and Mosholu Ave.
Join the Tibbetts Brook Trash Clean-up on Nov. 20 from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Tibbetts Brook is a tributary to the Hudson River Estuary, flowing through the city of Yonkers into the Bronx, at the heart of Van Cortlandt Park. This small freshwater stream is highly impacted by stormwater runoff, washing in trash from along the roadways. Join in the clean up where folks will be strapping on waders, and hopping into the brook or walking along the shoreline removing trash. Bring along water and a snack and meet in front of the VC Golf Clubhouse (enter the park at Bailey and Van Cortlandt Park South) for sign in and instructions.
A “Get Fit Expo” will be held in the Williamsbridge Oval Recreation Center, located at 3225 Reservoir Oval E, Bronx, NY 10467, on Saturday, Nov. 20, from 12.30 p.m. to 3 p.m.. See attached flyer below for more details.
