Lehman College is marking Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 to Oct. 15) with an array of cultural activities, thought-provoking panel discussions, and exciting performances that highlight the many contributions Hispanic and Latinx communities have made to U.S. history. In celebration of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month, a Fiesta de Flores celebration will be held at the New York Botanical Garden on Friday, Oct. 13, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Garden Terrace Room. The event is being held in collaboration with New York City Council Member Vanessa Gibson, and will present a Distinguished Leadership Award to Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. Come enjoy music, crafts, food, and much more! A celebration of the unique, native cultures of America, the Bronx Native American Festival is being held at Pelham Bay Park, located at Bruckner Boulevard and Wilkinson Avenue, on Sunday, Sept. 26, at noon. There will be performances by Bobby Gonzalez, Thunderbird American Indian Dancers, The Silvercloud Singers and demonstrations by Jorge Estevez and Joy Tonepahhote. Admission is free. The Historical Society of the New York Courts (White Plains, NY), in partnership with the Woodlawn Cemetery & Conservancy, present the virtual event Legal History from the Ground Up: Unearthing New York’s Legal Ancestors at Woodlawn Cemetery on Sept. 29, at 6 p.m. Many of the giants of New York law, including William Nelson Cromwell, Samuel Untermyer, and even Charles Evans Hughes, have their final resting places in Woodlawn Cemetery.

A panel of descendants will take the audience on a journey sharing little known stories about these important lawyers and judges and discuss their impact on the law today. Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, located on the campus of Lehman College/CUNY at 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West, Bronx, NY 10468, celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month. On Saturday, Oct. 2, at 8 p.m. a don’t-miss show will feature one of the most popular big bands in Latin music, the incredible Mambo Legends Orchestra, accompanying Colombian singer, Patty Padilla, in a tribute to Celia Cruz. The second part of the show will feature the iconic Puerto Rican singer and songwriter, Andy Montañez, accompanied by the Mambo Legends. The Nest Music Conservatory, a non-profit organization providing music education to youths in the Bronx through out-of-school programs, has reopened. The organization is dedicated to creating a nurturing environment that contributes to the social and emotional growth of students, their families, and our communities through classes, events, and concert series. The Bronx Night Market is the largest event series in Uptown, The Bronx, and Westchester County and takes place every Saturday at 1 Fordham Plaza from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. It attracts thousands every Saturday, April through November, to Fordham Plaza. Literature & Spoken Word 

Rebel Girls is hosting a book launch to celebrate their new book, “Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Real Life Tales of Black Girl Magic,” which includes stories of 100 barrier-breaking, Black women. This outdoor event will take place at The Lit. Bar, 131 Alexander Ave (between 134th Street and Bruckner Boulevard) Bronx, NY 10454 on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 11.30 a.m., and will include various surprises and giveaways.

 

First launched in 2019, the New York City International Book Fair / Feria Internacional del Libro NYC, an initiative of the CUNY Mexican Studies Institute, aims to disseminate academic and literary work published in Spanish, whether in Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain, or the United States, and, at the same time, promote better reading habits within Hispanic communities in New York. Tango, Foxtrot, and Cha-cha, oh my! Every Thursday until October, the Silver Shoes Dance Club welcomes all dancers 55 years and older for free dance classes at Van Cortland Park’s Woodlawn Playground at Van Cortlandt Park East and Kepler Avenue. The exhibit Born in Flames: Feminist Futures is on display at the Bronx Museum, now through September 26. The exhibit showcases the visions of contemporary artists. Kingsbridge Heights Community Center (KHCC), 3101 Kingsbridge Terrace and Summit Place, presents “Together, We are New York at KHCC: Art Lives” on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Two local artists, supported by the Association for a Better New York (ABNY), will be bringing a new mural to life at KHCC, and documenting the process. Both are Kingsbridge Heights kids: one grew up as a member of KHCC’s “Early Head Start” program and the other is a small business owner who also creates works of art. Other artists will also be showcased through the City Artist Corps.

 

The exhibit, Wardell Milan: Amerika, God Bless You If It’s Good To You, opens on Wednesday, June 23, at the Bronx Museum and will remain open until October 24. The exhibit showcases 12 new drawings and mixed media created by the artist Wardell Milan. Milan and choreographer, Zachary Tye Richardson, will present new performance works as part of the exhibit. Scarecrows & Pumpkins is ongoing at the New York Botanical Garden through Sunday, Oct. 31, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Plentiful pumpkins and hordes of gourds will be on display at the LuEsther T. Mertz Library Building and on the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory Plaza. To add to the seasonal fun, more than 100 whimsical scarecrows will line the twisting trails of the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden. Storytime Cabaret with New York City Children’s Theater takes place on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Edible Academy Amphitheater. For 25 years, New York City Children’s Theater (NYCCT) has promoted children’s literacy and
social development through professional theater productions and arts-in-education programs. Film

The Fox and King has announced the season one finale of “B-Sides” which will premiere at the Mott Haven Film Festival for the 2021 season. Featuring Bronx-native emcee, Kevin “Advice” Toledo, the music docuseries has also been selected as a nominee for Best Documentary during the film festival’s award ceremony. It’s that time of year again! Williamsbridge Oval need male and female quarterbacks, running backs, receivers and a defensive line for the upcoming Flag Football Season. Flag Football practice will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Games will be on Saturdays. This program is geared toward all youth from 9 to 14 years of age. Van Cortlandt Park Alliance is hosting a Hike-toberfest on Saturday, Oct. 23. See why Van Cortlandt Park is where New Yorkers hike, when you join Van Cortlandt Park Alliance for Hike-toberfest. The NYPD, the Department of Youth and Community Development, the City’s five district attorneys’ offices and several City agency partners, community-based organizations and foundations launched the “Saturday Night Lights” program on July 10 and it continues all year long. The groups have opened 100 gyms across the City for free, high-quality sports programs for kids on Saturday nights, ensuring no indoor gyms will be closed on these nights – the time when they are needed most by kids in city communities.

 

Each Saturday evening, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., children from 11 to 18 years-of-age will be able to enjoy an array of indoor sports, including basketball, soccer, volleyball, dance, martial arts and more. According to the organizers, a key component of the program is bringing cops and kids together. Teams of Youth Coordination Officers from NYPD precincts will be at each of the 100 gymnasiums every Saturday night, helping to coach and participating with members of various Community Based Organizations to interact with young people and help make a lasting and positive impact in their lives.

 

Join NYC Parks, Montefiore Health System, Empire Bluecross/Blueshield, Einstein College of Medicine & BronxNet from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2021 in St. James Park, at 2530 Jerome Avenue in Fordham Manor,  for Bronx Fit Fest. A Bocce Tournament will be held next to the bocce courts in Pelham Bay Park, Bronx from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25. Players compete in borough-wide tournaments with the 1st and 2nd place teams advancing to the citywide championships. This event is free!

 

Join NYC Parks’ Urban Park Rangers on a nature exploration hike through Seton Falls Park Accessible, the Grand Canyon of the Bronx, Saturday, Sept. 25, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Park’s Ranger hiking guides will introduce you to the hidden gems of New York City parks. The location is East 233rd Street and Baychester Avenue. This event is free. (Directions to this location)

Helmets are available for all ages. You must be present to get a helmet and you must learn how to properly fit it. A parent or legal guardian must be present to sign a waiver for children under 18. Adults over age 18 receiving a helmet must sign a waiver. Masks are required during the entire fitting. All CDC social distancing protocols will be followed.
