Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernandez, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, will perform at The Lehman Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 4 p.m. The company’s US tour in Fall 2018 was a coast-to-coast success, packing out houses across the country and receiving an enthusiastic response from audience members new and old. Founded in 1952 by dancer and choreographer Amalia Hernández, Ballet Folklórico brings together the music, dance and costume of Mexican folklore from pre-Colombian civilizations through the modern era. The Nest Music Conservatory, a non-profit organization providing music education to youths in the Bronx through out-of-school programs, has reopened. The organization is dedicated to creating a nurturing environment that contributes to the social and emotional growth of students, their families, and our communities through classes, events, and concert series. The center suffered severe damages due to the recent hurricane, and had intended to be open for regular after school programs in time for the beginning of the school year but was delayed during repairs. The center, located at 3636 Holland Ave, The Bronx, NY 10467, USA will be open daily, Monday to Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Call 718-994-6378 for more information.

KIDS

On Saturday, Jan. 15, between noon and 1.30 p.m., bring out the artist within through the “Creative Art – Family Edition” program and participate in an arts or theater program at Norwood’s Williamsbridge Oval Recreation Center, located at 3225 Reservoir Oval East, Bronx, NY 10467. Participants are welcome to explore the arts, with skilled staff, through different mediums including dance, theater, music, comic book creation, woodcarving, painting, and drawing, as well as attend a lecture, panel, or talk.

 

Each Monday, from Jan. 3 to March 31, from 6 p.m. to 6.45 p.m., Ballet for Kids classes will take place Norwood’s Williamsbridge Oval Recreation Center, located at 3225 Reservoir Oval East, Bronx, NY 10467. At Bronx Community Board 7 Parks’ committee meeting on Thursday, Jan. 13, it was confirmed that the Poe Park Visitor Center will be opening soon. However, St. James Park Recreation Center is still damaged due to Storm Ida and will not be opened for another while yet, though it is also expected to happen some time in the spring. At all citywide Parks’ recreation centers, membership is now no longer free, but there are deals available for certain groups. On Sunday, Jan. 23, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., Gallery 505 will be opening its first exhibition of the year. The gallery is pleased to be sharing the work of Bronx artist, Doris Cordero. “Bronx Calling: The Fifth AIM Biennial,” curated by Ian Cofre and Eva Mayhabal Davis, is a meditation on the practice of everyday life in uncertain times and runs from Nov. 10 through March 20, 2022. Featuring artworks by 68 artists who took part in the 2018 and 2019 cycles of the Bronx Museum’s AIM Fellowship program, the fifth edition of “Bronx Calling” finds artists responding to the conditions of contemporary life in manifold ways. Whether in traditional or new media, many of the works are recent creations, the result of processing multiple crises—of health, grief, the environment, and identity. MOVEMENT

The NYPD, NYC Department of Youth and Community Development, the City’s five district attorneys’ offices, and several City agency partners, community-based organizations and foundations launched the “Saturday Night Lights” program on July 10, 2021, which continues all year long. The groups have opened 100 gyms across the City for free, high-quality sports programs for kids on Saturday nights, ensuring no indoor gyms will be closed on these nights – the time when they are needed most by kids in city communities.

Each Saturday evening, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., children and youth, aged 11 to 18, will be able to enjoy an array of indoor sports, including basketball, soccer, volleyball, dance, martial arts and more. According to the organizers, a key component of the program is bringing cops and kids together. Teams of Youth Coordination Officers from NYPD precincts will be at each of the 100 gymnasiums every Saturday night, helping to coach and participating with members of various Community Based Organizations to interact with young people and help make a lasting and positive impact in their lives. NYC Parks and the Madison Square Garden Company are teaming up to host citywide basketball clinics and leagues free for boys and girls, ages 7 through 17.

NYC Parks and the Madison Square Garden Company are teaming up to host citywide basketball clinics and leagues free for boys and girls, ages 7 through 17. The NYC Parks Junior Knicks Basketball Clinics and League uses the game of basketball to unite boys and girls from across New York City, providing a positive, structured environment for self-improvement, personal growth, and community development.

 

This year, more than 180 teams will participate in 8U Co-ed,10U Co-ed 12UBoys, 12 Girls, and 17 U Boys, 17 U Girls age divisions across the five boroughs. Instructional clinics are featured in each borough that will provide an opportunity regardless of skill leave an opportunity to have a positive basketball experience followed by a league in each borough. Teams will play intra-borough weekly round robin schedule and then compete in intra-borough tournaments culminating the program with a Citywide Championship. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
