The Bronx Arts Ensemble presents two free concerts at 2 p.m.: July 22 – featuring Beethoven serenades, at Fordham University’s McGinley Center; and July 29 – Mary Ann McSweeney’s Urban Fado ensemble performing Urban Fado, a mix of contemporary jazz and Portuguese folk music, at Rockwood Drive Circle in Van Cortlandt Park (Mosholu Avenue and Broadway) near the stables (rain date: Aug. 5). The New York Botanical Garden’s Farmers Market is scheduled to be held Wednesdays through Oct. 31 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., just inside the Mosholu entrance and across the street from the Botanical Garden station of the Metro North commuter railroad. Wave Hill, a Bronx oasis at 675 W. 252nd St. in Riverdale, offers Family Art Projects: Spray a Garden, to make paper flowers, July 21 and 22; and Cool-Off Colors Collage, to make a collage from a variety of materials, July 28 and 29; both in the WH House from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Also scheduled is Sunset Wednesdays: Live Music on the Great Lawn at 7 p.m.: July 25 – Smokey’s Secret Family, featuring Smokey Hormel and his band performing ‘50s and ‘60s Latin; and Aug. 1 – Phoebe Hunt & The Gatherers, featuring jazz and swing music (rain location for both: indoors). Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
