Every Thursday until October, the Silver Shoes Dance Club welcomes all dancers 55 years and older for free dance classes at Van Cortland Park’s Woodlawn Playground at Van Cortlandt Park East and Kepler Avenue. No experience or partner is necessary, and the dancing kicks off at 10 a.m. All dancers must follow COVID-19 safety guidelines. Family Camping will take place at Pelham Bay Park, on Friday, July 30, 2021 from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. Camp to create lasting memories, connect with the natural world, and bond with family. Camping affords us the opportunity to unplug from the diversions of everyday life and to laugh and play with our families. The Urban Park Rangers celebrate the tradition of camping and looks forward to welcoming your family.

 

For everyone’s safety, wear a mask if you are unvaccinated, or if it makes you feel more comfortable. All individuals should maintain social distancing of six feet during programming, regardless of vaccination status. Please wear a mask if social distancing cannot be maintained. The 2021 Disability Unite Festival will be held virtually on Sunday, July 25, at 4 p.m. Commemorate the 31st anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and celebrate Disability Pride with incredible programming for all ages, including musical and dance performances and powerful discussions about the issues of today.

The Disability Unite Festival will be shown on the Live Stream Center of disabilityunite.org. No sign up link needed, no passwords or code, and no need to buy a ticket! All you have to do is show up. The event includes musical and dance performances from award-winning disabled artists including singer-songwriter, Lachi, live streamed from popular NYC attractions, including Little Island, an announcement of the Disability Unite Got Talent Contest winners, and an exciting announcement from Special Olympics New York.

Panel discussions will be held on topics including disability employment, intersectionality, and digital accessibility. Speakers include Sharon McLennon Wier from the Center for Independence of the Disabled, Walei Sabry from the NYC Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, and Vint Cerf from Google. Van Cortlandt Park Alliance (VCPA) is calling on volunteers to get into tip-top shape for the athletes’ return to the park this fall. The group is calling on the public to support their Field & Trail Fund and be a partner in keeping the park clean, safe, and beautiful. With the public’s support, the group says they can plan ahead to “care for the fields and trails.”

With help from the public, VCPA can:

  • hire seasonal maintainers to mow, weed-wack, and maintain all the areas frequented by athletes;
  • purchase stone dust to fill ruts and potholes;
  • replace outdated equipment.

 

The NYC Parks department is hosting Adult Programs throughout the summer, starting July 6 through August 27, 2021 at the Williamsbridge Oval Recreation Center at 3225 Reservoir Oval East in Norwood. Below is a list of the various programs on offer.

More Stuff for Kids

Pack up the kiddies and head to the Williamsburg Oval Recreation Center, 3225 Reservoir Oval East in Norwood for a Toddler Scavenger Hunt on Thursday, July 29, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The Van Cortland House Museum is accepting applications for its Adventures in Time Summer History Camp. Campers will learn all about the Van Cortlandt Family while having fun outdoors. Kids will also be able to travel back in time to the early years of the Revolutionary War to see what life was like as a soldier in General George Washington’s Army. The camp is designed for 6 to 12-year-olds and runs for two weeks from Aug. 9 through Aug. 13 and from Aug. 16 through Aug. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Registration is $350 per child per week. Campers who enroll in two weeks of camp, or two or more children from the same family qualify for a 10 percent discount on registration fees. Early registration is recommended. The Fresh Air Fund has arranged for Fresh Air Summer Spaces for kids to play in at different locations throughout the Bronx this summer. See attached flyers for details.

 

The Van Cortlandt House Museum will have Story Hour with the Goats, every Thursday (weather permitting) at 2 p.m. starting on July 1. Attendees should meet under the Linden tree by the goat enclosure. Admission is free. There will be reading from a selection of goat-themed picture books each week. If the weather forecast calls for rain, organizers suggest calling on the morning of July 1 to confirm if it is still happening.

 

The Movies under the Stars series will continue in July. Grab a blanket and come enjoy a movie in a neighborhood park or playground! This summer, NYC Parks will host family-friendly movie showings across the five boroughs. Movies begin at dusk. These events are FREE and open to the public, but seating is limited.

 

Toy Story 4 will be screened on Saturday, July 24, at Bronx Park Amphitheatre (in Bronx Park), Bronx from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. A new toy named “Forky” joins the gang when Bonnie turns a spork into a toy. But when he disappears, Woody, Buzz and co. set out into the world to find him, resolve his existential crisis, and reunite with Bonnie.

 

Onward will be screened on Tuesday, July 27, at Mullaly Park, Bronx This is an Accessible location from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Two teenage elf brothers living in a post-magical world stumble upon a spell that can bring their father back to life. They embark on an epic, heartwarming adventure to see the spell through when it initially only brings back their father’s lower half (i.e. his legs). The event is free!

 

Tom and Jerry will be screened at Playground Fifty-Two (in Playground 52 LII), Bronx on Wednesday, July 28, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. A deep dive into the annals of history to explore the moment when Tom first crossed paths with his nemesis, Jerry. This event is free!

 

Megamind will be screened on Thursday, July 29, at Orchard Beach North picnic area. Megamind: Evil genius Megamind finally defeats his do-gooder nemesis, Metro Man, but is left without a purpose in a superhero-free world.

 

Coco will be screened on Friday, July 30, at Poe Park, Grand Concourse between East 192nd Street and East Kingsbridge. Coco: In this gorgeous animated adventure, a boy named Miguel dreams of becoming a famous guitar player, despite the misgivings of his close-knit family. When his ambitions cause him to run afoul of a curse, he must journey into the Land of the Dead to seek forgiveness from his ancestors.

 

The Goonies will be screened at Virginia Park, Bronx on Friday, July 30, from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. A group of teenagers finds a map leading to a hidden treasure. They must overcome booby traps, natural obstructions, and a gang of desperate thieves in their race for the loot. This event is free!

 

The Wizard of Oz will be screened on Saturday, July 31, at Stars and Stripes Playground, Baychester and Crawford Avenues
The Wizard of Oz: A young farm girl and her little dog are magically transported into the enchanted land of Oz via a Kansas tornado. As they travel down Oz’s Yellow Brick Road to find the Wizard and ask him to send them home, they encounter a wonderful, funny, terrifying and, ultimately, enlightening group of characters, human and otherwise.

Pigeonwing Dance

Founded by 2020 Guggenheim Fellow Gabrielle Lamb, the company chose the name “Pigeonwing” for its blend of airiness and NYC grit. Since its first steps in 2011, Pigeonwing has been presented by the CUNY Dance Initiative, 92Y’s Harkness Dance Festival, Bryant Park, Jacob’s Pillow, and Works and Process at the Guggenheim. In 2018 the Pigeons were the first
dance company commissioned by Symphony Space’s beloved Selected Shorts.

 

Pilobolus
July 31 and August 1, 7, 8, and 14
Pilobolus is a rebellious dance company whose repertoire tests the limits of human physicality to explore the beauty and power of connected bodies. Since 1971 they have appeared in more than 65 countries, and have collaborated with some of the greatest influencers, thinkers, and creators in the world. They will perform excerpts from Alraune and Pilobolus Is a Fungus.
Additional performances are scheduled for August, September, and October with the Paul Taylor Dance Company, BAAD! Bronx Academy of Arts & Dance, Trainor Dance, Ballet Hispánico, and Dance Theatre of Harlem.

Join the trolley tour of Woodlawn’s Greats of Jazz & Vaudeville with Michael Cumella, AKA DJ Mac on Sunday, July 25, at 11 a.m. and at 2 p.m. Visit the final resting place of these great musicians. Stops on the tour will include George M. Cohan, Nora Bays, Duke Ellington and many more. You will listen to the music of these notable musicians played on a Victrola. The Bronx Museum of the Arts continues with its five-part exhibition series, “5 Indices of A Tortured Body with The Trans Body” on Saturday, July 24, 2021, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. The collaborative effort between artist and choreographer, Zachary Tye Richardson, and designer, Billy Ray Morgan, will feature choreographed movements meant to expand on mourning, identity and love, related to the trans experience. The event runs in conjunction with Richardson’s current solo exhibition at the Bronx Museum of the Arts called “Wardell Milan: Amerika. God Bless You If It’s Good to You.” The former event is free. The Bronx River Arts Center is hosting Summer Art Classes for all ages starting July 6 through Aug. 9, including painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, and ceramics. Come learn, play and compete in the 2021 Girls Flag Football Season. Three NYC Parks sites in the Bronx are hosting clinics, leagues, and tournaments for girls. The Weekly Instructional Series/Clinics includes instructional drills and strategies for girls ages 10-17. The Bronx instructional series of Girls Flag Football Clinics will be held July 12  to August 27, for girls ages 10-17. Citywide Flag Football League: September 4 – November 13, 2021, ages 9-17. Age Groups: 6U Coed Instructional Series Only, 8U Coed Instructional Series Only, 10U Coed, 12U Coed, 14U Boys, 14U Girls, 17U Boys, 17U Girls.

Get your body moving this summer at HITT Cross Training Circuit now through Sept. 17 at St. James Place tennis courts. Hosted by the New York City Parks’ department, this free training program for adults combines a variety of exercises to reduce risk of injury and improve overall fitness. The classes are on Monday and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. at St. James Recreation Center, located at 2550 Jerome Avenue. Social distancing will be encouraged, regardless of vaccination status. Masks are required for people who are unvaccinated or who are not maintaining a social distance.

                

Outdoor Pool Season at New Van Cortlandt “Cool Pool”  

NYC Parks’ outdoor pools are open from June 26 through Sunday, Sept. 12. Daily hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. Pool capacity is limited for the upcoming season. Social distancing is still recommended, and face coverings will be required to enter the facility.

 

Van Cortlandt Pool is one of this year’s three new Cool Pools, along with Howard and Bushwick pools in Brooklyn. These pools have been transformed with a bright new paint palette, polar-themed art, new umbrellas provided by Poggesi USA, and more! Since 2018, the Cool Pools NYC initiative has upgraded a total of 16 pools, giving New Yorkers the chance to see an old neighborhood amenity in a new way.

 

The NYPD, the Department of Youth and Community Development, the City’s five district attorneys’ offices and several City agency partners, community-based organizations and foundations launched the “Saturday Night Lights” program on July 10 and it continues all year long. The groups have opened 100 gyms across the City for free, high-quality sports programs for kids on Saturday nights, ensuring no indoor gyms will be closed on these nights – the time when they are needed most by kids in city communities.

 

Each Saturday evening, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., children from 11 to 18 years-of-age will be able to enjoy an array of indoor sports, including basketball, soccer, volleyball, dance, martial arts and more. According to the organizers, a key component of the program is bringing cops and kids together. Teams of Youth Coordination Officers from NYPD precincts will be at each of the 100 gymnasiums every Saturday night, helping to coach and participating with members of various Community Based Organizations to interact with young people and help make a lasting and positive impact in their lives.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
