Bronx Community College assistant professor and head of archives, Cynthia Tobar, together with Nathaniel LaNasa and Gregory Feldmann, BCC students and local Bronx community residents is unveiling a new project together called American Icons. The collaborative project creates new, local, musical monuments based on oral histories of New York City residents, and the first performance in The Bronx to celebrate the project will be held on Friday, May 13, at University Heights Presbyterian Church, located at 2167 University Avenue, Bronx, NY 104503. Narrators will be Renea Bush and Jazmin Ramirez.
The project centers music and stories by Americans who live in the shadows cast by national myths and monuments. Whose stories are told, whose are erased? BCC is the home of the “Hall of Fame of Great Americans.” Project participants will share their own experiences, learning and working among monuments that fail to reflect America’s diversity. Norwood News previously covered another similar project by BCC which posed this very question of who exactly defines “American Greatness.”
For this event, musicians from Juilliard will interweave these stories with poetic and musical context from America’s past and present. Join for an evening of music that questions and deconstructs nationalistic artifacts from the past, while creating space that honors stories of America’s present. It is hoped the project will paint a more representative picture of the community Bronxites envision and celebrate in the borough. Music composed by Jorrel Williams and Shawn Chang, oral histories/storytelling by Cynthia Tobar, and performances by Nathaniel LaNasa and Gregory Feldmann. FILM

1.5 Million explores the political and economic forces that have brought about this literacy crisis in The Bronx, specifically, District 7 which is located in the south Bronx. With a lack of school libraries, classroom libraries, books within the community, bookstores, robust marketing by the NYPL in The Bronx and decades of divestment to education, a literacy crisis has come to fruition in The Bronx. Born from the stereotypes that people in The Bronx do not read and are only known for having interests in sneaker and liquor stores; it is not by coincidence that access to literature has a profound effect on the culture of reading. As of 2016, only 56% of high school graduates in The Bronx are college ready. Poverty is a major factor, with 40% of children in the South Bronx living below the poverty line. A child raised in poverty is 13 times less likely to finish high school on time, if at all.
70 percent of third grade students in The South Bronx are unable to read at their grade level. The New York City Department of Education has found that children who fail to meet the third grade benchmark are more likely to drop out of high school and remain in poverty. The South Bronx has the poorest congressional districts in the nation and has the most unemployed, according to a 2016 report by South Bronx Rising Together (SBRT)
Multimedia exhibition Bronx BandA: Love and Resilience opens on January 31 and runs through May 13 at the Casita Maria Gallery located at 928 Simpson Street, in the Hunts Point neighborhood of the South Bronx. The exhibition centers on the story of BronX BandA, as well as the Bronxites who inspired their music. Using oral histories, video, photography, and newly released BronX BandA album, coloring book and short film titled The Casita Sessions, gallery visitors will experience a diverse mix of storytelling methods celebrating Bronx culture and communities and the music which was created during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Love and Resilience celebrates the collaboration between Casita Maria and six-time Grammy award winner Arturo O’Farrill that resulted in the formation of the nine-piece ensemble BronX BandA. Founded in the early days of the pandemic, the group adapted their performances to comply with COVID-19 regulations; the exhibition documents this fluidity. Ensemble members, all of whom are Bronx-based or work in the Bronx, began their journey together through ZOOM, rehearsing and composing new music remotely. Instead of performing in public spaces throughout the Bronx as originally planned, BronX BandA made their debut in a virtual livestream paired with a puppetry and narration by Redwing Blackbird Theater. From there, the group went on to play pop-up performances, record an album of original compositions at Sear Sound in Manhattan, film a documentary, and collaborate with Musicians from the New York Philharmonic.
Love and Resilience, the band’s new album and namesake of the exhibition, features 12 original compositions, 8 of which are inspired by the oral histories of Bronx cultural icons. Oral Historian Berta Jottar and Arturo O’Farrill collected life stories from jazz pianists Bertha Hope and Valerie Capers, Executive Director of En Foco Bill Aguado, tres player Nelson Gonzalez, folklorist Elena Martinez, and DJ Grandwizzard Theodore inventor of the scratch and the needle drop, transforming their memories into original jazz compositions. Excerpts from the oral history recordings dedicated to the Bronx are presented in the new exhibition.
Featured videos include a documentary short by filmmaker Taylor Krauss of Render Circus that follows the band from January through June 2021, and a recording of their debut performance with Redwing Blackbird Theatre in collaboration with CultureHub. Photographs by Argenis Appolinario document BronX BandA’s story from August 2020 through June 2021. An interactive storytelling approach is provided through the coloring book, commissioned from Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, Sabrina Cintron of Somos Arte and BronX BandA spoken word artist Baba Israel. The new album and accompanying coloring book will both be distributed to visitors for free while supplies last. The Bronx community are invited to an in-person celebration with DJ music by Grandwizzard Theodore in the Casita Maria Gallery on May 12, from 5:30-8pm. As reported, Poe Park Visitor Center has reopened with limited programming. However, St. James Park Recreation Center is still damaged due to Storm Ida and has not yet reopened as of March 16, though it is also expected to happen some time in the spring. At all citywide Parks’ recreation centers, membership is now no longer free, but there are deals available for certain groups. See attached link for more information on membership fees: https://www.nycgovparks.org/rules/section-2-14.
