Op-Ed: Skip Dog Pageants & Adopt Instead

Beneath the polished facade of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show [which took place in Queens County from May 11-May 14] lies cruelty obscured by overgroomed coats and circumscribed poses: the suffering caused by deliberately breeding and inbreeding dogs to meet human-dictated “beauty standards.”

Inbreeding leads to debilitating health issues, from reproductive complications to respiratory disorders, and even shortened lifespans. Flat-faced breeds like French bulldogs and pugs struggle to breathe; short-legged breeds such as corgis and dachshunds have leg, joint, and back problems; and seemingly sturdy breeds including labradors and golden retrievers are prone to an early death from cancer. The list goes on.

Dog shows that put animals on display treat dogs as customizable commodities, driving up demand and worsening the animal overpopulation crisis in which some 70 million animals are homeless in the U.S.

Shelters in New York City are filled to capacity. While a new Animal Care Center is under construction in The Bronx, animals in nearby shelters desperately need homes. Skip the pageantry and crown a real winner by adopting a dog instead.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students. As you navigate this website, please let us know if you discover any glitches or if you have any suggestions. We’d love to hear from you.
