Op-Ed: Defending Reputation of JHS 80

As a sixth grade teacher at MS 80, I was deeply disheartened to see recent negative news stories that have attacked our students, staff and community. Our students are upset and hurt that they have been made to look like delinquents. Simply put, what has been written about MS 80 is false—if you take the time to talk to our students and teachers, it is easy to see that there are amazing opportunities and programs at our school.

Not only are teachers coming in prepared to provide the strongest academic experience possible, students are eager to learn each and every day.

Students are taught from a wide range of texts and materials, and constantly challenge themselves to reach the highest level of learning so they can grow and prepare themselves to attend the best high schools. We use digital tools in a variety of subjects, which has allowed our students to learn and practice from programs and lessons that were previously unavailable to them. The use of digital tools has served as an excellent way for students to share their work and provide feedback, which is one of the most successful learning practices we have implemented at MS 80.

The perseverance of our students and staff has translated to significant academic growth over the last few years— chronic absenteeism has dropped, and proficiency in ELA and math among our students have grown 15 percentage points and 7 percentage points since 2014. While just a few years ago MS 80 was considered a school that was struggling, we are now a school on the “Rise,” and are transitioning out of the Department of Education’s “Renewal Schools,” program. Of course we have more work to do, but I know that we have the tools in place to allow for more success in the years ahead.

These improvements are thanks to principal Polanco’s leadership, and working under him has been the best experience an educator can ask for. Principal Polanco always offers his continued support and is responsive to the needs of teachers, students and their families. His open door policy provides everyone in the community the opportunity to chat, raise concerns, ask for help and share ideas. As a result, we have developed a culture of trust among teachers and staff at school. I know that I can seek out their advice and rely on them to help me work through any issues I am having in the classroom. I have personally grown tremendously as a teacher at MS 80 because principal Polanco empowers me to take risks in the classroom that encourage student growth and academic achievement.

Challenges exist at every school, but at MS 80 our mission is to ensure that we support and push one another as a family.

We work together as a community to address any issues of academic development or misbehavior. This can take the form of a one to one talk, a parent phone call or meeting, or a quick check-in with students to get them back on track. Since we are a family, we don’t pass judgment on one another. Instead, we band together during challenging times and work to build each other up.

None of the improvements at MS 80 would have been possible without our amazing students, who are working hard and pushing themselves beyond what many thought possible. It is completely irresponsible to generalize our students and defame their character, and what has been written and said about them could not be further from the truth.

I have had many deep and intense conversations these last few days with my students to console them and reassure them of their worth. While many of the young adults in our building face difficult odds, every day they bring a focus, determination and work ethic to class that is truly inspiring.

We will not let misinformation about our school stop us from continuing to thrive. Our students are amazing scholars who should be highlighted and celebrated for their accomplishments. Our teachers and staff work tirelessly to provide the best education possible. And our school is an amazing family that loves and cares for one another.

The future at MS 80 is bright, and I cannot wait to see what we are able to accomplish next.

I strongly agree with you Mrs. Savery. I’m pretty sure all students from MS 80 were very offended and dishearten especially teachers. Fallacious information will not bring down JHS 80, we will still be a school, get our education and graduate and be proud we’re not students but scholars. We will continue to work our way up to the highest level. ~Alisha

  3. Ms. Inserra 4th grade licensed teacher

As a former teacher at MS. 80 I would like to speak on behalf of the students and myself. The article Is misunderstood. It’s not about the students it’s about the leadership, support, and safety of students and staff. You all probably have been coaching your students on what to say and feel not on facts and Truths. If it’s about their futures and their success what are your plans for the students once they go to high school? In High School they will not have access to a lab top all day and they will have to remember after three years how to write and produce work again. Just please answer this honestly. How will you prepare the students to transition into high school? Are you linked with a technology high school? Are you all licensed teachers truly giving them what they need and deserve? Did that student slip and fall or was he dropped on his head and caused to convulse? Why was the ambulance called so late? Do his parents know it was not an accident? Why were the teachers involved asked to change the story in the report? Stop blaming it on the truth start looking out for the students and their safety and ungoing education? I worked there for one year and was assaulted twice in the classroom and there was no support! Stop hiding behind an idea that the students are made out to be the issue because this is not about the students this is about getting rid of unfit administration that lie and cover up the truth! You all sound scared of the fact that you are all mandated reporters and abuse and neglect is the real issue!

Well said…with many truths as a former MS 80 teacher myself. The leadership IS the problem. The adults in the building are what made that place a nightmare to go to. The students were the highlight of my day.

      1. Irene

I agree. The students are 95 percent lovely and hardworking. But I call bullshit on the praise of Polanco and his cronies. Maybe this teacher is among his favorites and has not felt his wrath…yet.

    2. Proud Licensed 21st Century Teacher

Everyone’s experience at MS 80 is different Ms. Inserra. Why come out now with these allegations? Why not follow the proper reporting protocols at the times of the incidents? Is this a personal vendetta, due to your personal desires and intentions which were not fulfilled? How quickly do you forget you were doing student’s “make up” in your classrooms without parental consent? (covering up hickeys on students neck). You are a mandated reporter. Why didn’t this instead of covering it up? Meanwhile bragging about it. Were the parents aware? Why were you doing this incognito without the consent of administration. Yes, you are a licensed teacher and a professional. So, why were you showing up to work provocatively and inappropriately dressed to a middle school. Last “Academic Year 2016-17” MS 80 had approximately 650 students. Do you mean to say that most students are violent and you felt unsafe at all times? but yet did not report it then.

We live in the 21st century. Learning and pedagogy is quickly changing in this era. It is clear that your education philosophy does not align with that or MS 80, who is preparing its students for the future. The careers that our children are going to be competing for in the next five to ten years require 21st century skills. It is a blessing, that at MS 80 students are being guided and supported to be prepared to compete in a 21st century global market. The administration and counselors have been working with students and parents closely, to ensure that they go to a school that will reinforce their 21st Century skills and academics. How quickly do you forget that MS 80 has the following programs for students in place;“Prep for Prep”, “Specialized High School Preparations”, an Accelerated Program to prepare students to enter High School with up to 5 High School Regents. Were you aware that the “Academic Year 2016-2017” that one 8th grade student graduated from MS 80 with five “High School Regents; and some 8th grade students graduated with four, three, or two “High School Regents” exams. Please research how other schools in the surrounding areas performing.

You are bringing up allegations and speaking on events that you were not present for. You align yourself with one rotten apple who happens to sit down all day, and does not teach with purpose and intent and brags about her relationship with the kids because she lets them do what they want and then turns around and uses it as evidence against them. A teacher who pretends to teach. Now your integrity and your motives are questioned?

All the incidents and allegations you are speaking of have been reported. Did you forget that the second incident happened at another school? Did you forget that it was the student of another school who tried to attack the students of MS 80? Do you forget that that school was supposed to guard everyone’s safety. Ask yourself this, are you pointing the finger at MS 80 as a personal vendetta?

The students were not coached. Students came in questioning the article, as teenagers would. As a result, teachers turned it into a “teachable moment” addressing the week’s standards (see below); What was the author’s purpose? What was the validity of these sources? Do these sources speak for everyone? Students decided to voice their opinions. Why stop students from voicing their opinions? At MS 80 students are taught to be independent learners.

P.S: Last question; Were you not the teacher who wanted to beat up another teacher because of a love interest?

I agree with you because I was upset that they used information that wasn’t valid. And thank for standing up for us

  5. Abu Raihan

I strongly agree with you Ms. Savery and i think that everyone in this school believes you and Ms 80 is offended and dishearten especially teachers. Fallacious information will not bring down JHS 80, we will still be a school, get our education and graduate and be proud we’re not students but scholars. We will continue to work our way up to the highest level.

  6. Alexander Browne

Mrs. Savery thank you for sharing about what you felt was wrong about that article and how they were discouraging us. Most of all thank you for standing up for the kids and what they said about us.

  7. Yusuf Lakhi

Mrs Savery, i would like to say that i agree with you and i know we we were all being because we thought this school was going to close down but we were strong enough to fight back and by this article, everybody will change their feelings and thoughts. A lot of people thought we were bad students but this school has strong opportunities and that is because of laptops that a lot of people stated that it is a distraction but now you can see that we can see pictures of pieces of work no one else can and since everybody prints, we can just search it and it pops up.

    1. Yusuf Lakhi

Mrs Savery, i would like to say that i agree with you and i know we we were all being *sad* because

  8. Christian Clarke

I feel disrespected on the way you interpret
our school in a way that no one but a minimum of kids feel.As you explained that we had minecraft and inappropriate websites, too that i say it’s not possible as the deans and the NYC has blocked those sites for student accounts. To say we play minecraft is blasphemy because if we are being monitored on a smartboard by our teachers. In my experience i’ve never been threatened or hit by any ms 80 student.I agree with Mrs.savery.

    1. Mrs. Savery

Yes Christian, many will agree that they feel safe and that their teachers and support staff are there to ensure that.

  9. Abdullah Muhid

I strongly agree with Mrs. Savery because she said everything thing that was true and her evidence was that she is a 6 grade teacher which means that she is the one who stays with the students most of the time and she knows how students behave. Where in the other hand there is a person writing a article about MS 80 without valid evidence, they based the article on information from only one students and a teacher and the worst part was that they didn’t interview all the kids that was in the school. They were writing the article on a fake evidence/opinion because they just interviewed a student and a teacher and no one else which means that the article was based on a opinion from a person not a fact. By the way a amazing article that Mrs. Savery has written and I believe that the school will receive an apology from the writers with the fake information. -Abdullah

  10. Matthew Batista

Mrs. Savery a strongly agree,we shouldn’t be treated like killers and show them our true colors in this school and keep them from trying to shut down this school.we will continue to learn and evolve in this school to reach success because without your help we would’ve been completely bullied by everyone around us and M.S.80 would’ve been shut down forever so thank you so much.

    Love Matthew B.

  11. Isabella Fretto

Mrs. Savery I agree with you I also, feel like they should have not talked bad about MS 80 without evidence. I also know that I want to get into a good high school but I might not be able to because of the bad things that are being said about MS 80. I feel like we should continue to use our voices and let bad things be said about MS 80.

  12. jeison espinal

from my opinion of this article i think that this article was very inspiring and sets the truth into place to prove that our school and students that go to it are violent or any sort of lies as stated in the other article towards us with false information and the article you wrote stated the truth and proved them wrong .It also remembers us about our growth and makes me appreciate being a student at ms 80,Go Hawks!!!.proud .

  13. Johnnamel Nunez

    Dear Mrs. Savery,

I strongly agree with you, the other article that rudely talked about our school was very disrespectful. But, we will not let that make us give up. We will keep working harder to achieve our goals because with this education that we receive, we have become amazing scholars. The teachers help us accomplish the many things of our education, and it is true that the future of this school is bright.

    1. Mrs. Savery

Yes, our continued effort and perseverance will show great results and speak louder than those false allegations,

  15. Jeremy Colon

I think that they should not talk about our school if they have not actually gone into the school before. Some people want to talk about our school if they did not go into the school and it does not make sense.

  16. Eddie Morales

Mrs. Savery thanks for supporting our school I appreciate all you have done to help this school. Also we will have success because of this school. ~ Eddie

  17. Sean Manglallan

I agree with you Mrs. Savery because I feel that students have been offended. Also I really think it was really rude of them to write the article. This school is great and I also feel safe everywhere in the school.

I strongly agree with you Mrs. Savery because the stuff that you said we as scholars will keep having success and work really hard when we reach college. We fight for our school MS 80. And we do have a voice so we can speak of what we think.

  26. DJ 606

i strongly agree with ms. savery I’m very disappointed in who said this about our school. Not everybody in this school is violent we are 1 big family. we might argue someday but isn’t that a family. i love this school, these teacher , even the students. go find a school with computers and tablets like us. you will probably have to go out the borough. you will never see a school like us. this school is the best and if not the best to us we are.

    1. Mrs. Savery

DJ, you are so right. We are “1 big family.” and I could have said it any better myself when you stated ” Not everybody in this school is violent we are 1 big family. we might argue someday but isn’t that a family. i love this school, these teacher , even the students. “

Ms,Rosse Mary Savery #thank you for witing this article it is a big help my class loved it and made a big differents to make my class to smile and cheer in the stairs that ms 80 will never go.

    1. Mrs. Savery

I’m so happy to know that it brought a smile to you and your peers. Stay strong and don’t ever allow any negativity to distract you from being your best.

  28. Elsie Martinez

    Elsie Martinez

Mrs. Savery I also agree with you on every single statement you made and more. Mr. Polanco is a role model and an inspiration to students, parents, teachers and the community.

Every single tax dollar that is allocated for the school is evident! He has beautified the school and made it a pleasant environment to work. Students have brand new lockers, locks, microphones to be heard in class, a personal computer, a five-section notebook for math, mechanical pencils, books on Amazon if requested, the student of the month breakfast for achievement, the MS 80 Challenge, and more.

Furthermore, teachers mentor each other and the administration is approachable. Administrators provide 21st-century strategies and curriculum planning to ensure that all students have an opportunity to learn. Instruction is a pleasure. This school is a dream for all who want to move into the 21st century. Classrooms have two SmartBoards and teachers have their own microphones. Teachers are also provided with a Mac computer for the school year as a tool for planning.

At the beginning of the year, we get goodie bags for our classrooms and a new MS 80 bag. We now have a teacher’s table that can be adjusted for conferences, teaching or as a work desk. The Department of Education allows us $ 250.00 for Teacher’s Choice and Mr. Polanco matches it with another $ 250.00 in Shop DOE if needed.

As aforementioned, MS has been misrepresented. Before anyone utters a word they are not sure about, they need to speak to students, teachers, and parents. Please………………… do not believe the voices that do not represent our school in the true light!
    What say you?

    Mrs. Elsie Martinez

    1. Mrs. Savery

Thank You Mrs. Martinez for standing up and highlighting in detail all of the wonderful things happening at our school.

  29. Kevin 606

Hey Ms. Savery, how are you

I just wanted to say thank you for writing that amazing article. My class and I really want to say that we love the fact that you defend and stand up for Ms.80 school of education. I love this school as much as you do and I want to stay here until I leave 8th grade.

    Thank you, love
    Kevin Sanchez

  30. Kevin Escoto

Mrs.Savery i agree with you and i am so thankful for you standing up for our school and everything you said is the truth.

  31. Moni Sultana

Mrs. Savery, I strongly agree with you is because we are not “delinquents” we are sixth graders learning and doing our best everyday until we are ready for the state test and if were “delinquents” how are some of us doing good in IReady reaching our lexile and how did we get 91 or 90 something percatnge for our test meaning some of us ( students) got it right and some got it wrong ? I am demanding apology.

  32. Anneris Moyeno

Mrs. Savery, I strongly agree to your statement about me, my classmates, and every person working at Middle School 80. We have come such a long way fro anyone to take us down now. The article that those people wrote about us might give us just one more reason to push ourselves to be our best, to show those writers we are more than just children in front of computers. Sure, maybe there are SOME and only some arguments here and there and we get through them. That is how we work and if this article does’t change those writer’s minds, then i don’t know what will. Thank you for being my teacher.

    1. Mrs. Savery

It is an honor to be your teacher. What is most important is that you KNOW that you are an amazing scholar.

  33. Haniel Abreu

Ms Savery, as a student of MS.80 I strongly agree with with you because we are a progressing school that has so many good things about it. The people that wrote the other text was truly lying because we are a good school and they were probably just guessing what to put. You have the right to write that that was a lie because it was they only have a opinion from one of the students when there are 700 student in M.S80. You, the staff, kids and teachers have the right to speak up to the people who told a lie.

Mrs. Savery i think me and my whole class can strongly agree with you we should not let misinformation about our school stop us from continuing to learn and to keep progressing .Me as well as my class will continue to try the hardest we can to show the best versions of ourselves and to do the best that we can do and to make you proud and to also make every one else proud .So we will continue to fight for our school .We will not stop fighting for our school until we are satisfied with the fight be put up and we will bring them down.

  35. Carlos Martinez

Mrs. Savery I also strongly agree with you. Also we will get in fight but not all the time because we are not perfect kids and some point we will get upset. But one thing I know and everyone know is that we are not bad kids, and that we are all scholars.

  36. Darian Banegas

I like this article but then I also didn’t like the image at the very top of the because it is talking about how they need a new Worker because if they get new workers then it will be bad for our school because it has a high change of it to be shut down because the more people who dislike the school and is saying lies about our school, the more chance that our school will be shut down. also it it bad because they can persuade people to work for them and so they can see bad reports about our school, and we should get a apology from them because of the lies they said about us.

    1. Mrs. Savery

I love how you analyzed the text features. All we have to do is stay strong and focused and we’ll get through this as the family we are at MS 80

  37. Daniel Barrera

  38. Carlos Martinez

i felt better that ms. savery wrote this because its not fair that the new york posts get to talk about us and our staff and school and what are we going to do NOTHING well, no we need to stund up for this school and for ourselfs and what ms. savery wrote made my feelings burst.

    1. Mrs. Savery

Melanie, I am proud to stand for my students and our Ms 80 family. What we need to continue doing is work hard and Soar to Excellence.

    Mrs. Savery,
As one of your students, I am so motivated by what you wrote. I read the article and it showed me that I can have a voice just like you do. As you said, in the time that I have been attending MS.80, all my teachers and some of the staff (including Mr . Polanco) have motivated every student in our class to do better in their work .

Thank you for writing the Op-Ed .
    Malvyn Sanchez

    1. Mrs. Savery

I am so proud to be your teacher. Let’s let our hard work speak to the wonderful scholars that MS 80 has.

  42. Daniel Tavarez

I think that the news writers should apologize to this school because MS80 it the best school i have ever attended. The teachers, the staff, and everyone else support the students . The teachers at this school have high hopes for us. Our teachers want to help us get smarter and more intelligent so we can take the right path and not make the mistakes some people do when they take the wrong path. I severely think that these people should apologize to the school and make feel better.

    Thank you for reading.

  43. Faiza Chowdhury

As a student in JHS 80, and I’m exasperated by the threat given about my peers, staff and my fellow teachers such as Mrs.Savery. Ms.Savery has helped through our struggles and motivated us to be better and bolder. Hearing that there was a dreadful article about our school made me weak and not important to this community. ~ Faiza

  44. Mrs. Savery

Don’t allow the ignorance of others define who you are. You are a strong and an amazing addition to the MS 80 family.

  45. Carlos martinez

    I agree Mrs. Savery
this is really inspiring every thing that was in there was all true we will not give up , we all have a voice and we will use that voice to stand up for are school and when they strike us hard we strike even harder. And I am so glad Mrs. Savery
posted this because this shows that MS.80 will not give up so easily and as a student Mrs. Savery
has helped every one with their problems and sometimes she has helped students with personal problems.

    CARLOS MARTINEZ #stand for MS.80

As a MS80 student the article that the NY Post has written made me and other students mad. My 6th grade teacher was Ms.Savery and the environment of MS80 was not horrible and now that I’m a 7th grader nothing is changed. I still feel welcomed and safe in my school. The fact that the NY Post wrote these false aligations is insane. They shouldn’t find the need to criticis our school when other schools are doing worse. Our principal has mad the environment in classrooms because of what he decided to do. Our school has and is giving the other students and I opportunities most schools can’t give their students
