An off-duty, New York City Police Department employee was arrested and charged in the 45th precinct in the early hours of Saturday morning, Dec. 11.
Edwin Jerez, a 37-year-old male NYPD lieutenant was charged with driving while his ability to drive was impaired (DWAI). The 45th precinct serves a portion of the northeastern section of the Bronx, encompassing Co-op City and City Island.
According to police public records, Jerez joined the NYPD as a police officer in 2006, was promoted to sergeant in 2014 and became a lieutenant in March 2021. He is assigned to the 33rd precinct, which serves the Washington Heights section of Northern Manhattan. There are no applicable entries listed for his disciplinary history.
From 2007 through 2012, Jerez was recognized for excellent police duty. There are no further records listed since 2012.
A person charged with a crime is innocent unless and until found guilty in a court of law.
What is a DWAI? It sounds like he was charged with a less heinous charge because he was a cop! Right is right and wrong is wrong. You don’t just wake up and make one mistake. He has been a dirty cop. This isn’t the first time he got caught. Especially working in Co-op.
