Earlier today, Williamsbridge Oval Park was invaded by over 230 students participating in the New York Law Enforcement Explorers program.

Participants were enjoying a barbecue prepared by “grill sergeants” and a day off before heading off to sleepaway camp for a week as part of the summer academy.

The participants also spend two weeks at Fordham University taking swim lessons, learning first aid and other scenario responses, said William Montanaro, the program’s director.

The program is free for students, aside from a $15 application fee, and is geared towards those interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement.

Kyle Torain has been part of the program since he was 14, and attends the High School Law Enforcement and Public Safety. He is looking forward to having an edge on other police recruits thanks to the Explorer program.

“I found out about Explorers from a friend who was interested in law enforcement before I was,” said Dozzia Mantock, a student at Mount Vernon High School. “I thought it would be a good experience.”

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
