The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) shared its plans for the holiday weekend, which officials say may include snow/winter precipitation. As reported, some extreme weather is also forecast.
DSNY officials said the forecast is still changing a bit, but the department is monitoring it closely and preparing for potential snow. Spreaders and plows, they said, are ready to be deployed, if necessary.
Regarding collection of trash, recycling, compost and trees, this will be ongoing on Friday and Saturday. The department plans to transition to snow operation Sunday, and continue that work Monday. Residents are reminded that Monday is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a holiday, and no regular collection is planned for that day.
According to DSNY officials, the department keeps New York City healthy, safe and clean by collecting, recycling and disposing of waste, cleaning streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice. It operates 59 district garages and manages a fleet of more than 2,000 rear-loading collection trucks, 450 mechanical brooms and 705 salt spreaders. DSNY clears litter, snow and ice from approximately 6,500 miles of City streets as well as removing abandoned vehicles and debris from vacant lots.
Alternate Side Parking will be in effect on Saturday, Jan. 15.
Meanwhile, to celebrate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a Day of Service, NYC Parks are looking for volunteers to help clean up and care for parks across the five boroughs. Click here for more information.
