Norwood: Three Firefighters Injured in Early Morning Fire

Three firefighters were injured after an early morning fire broke out engulfing a row of shops along East Gun Hill Road between Jerome Avenue and DeKalb Avenue in the Norwood section of the Bronx on Thursday, Sept. 24. Three of the shops were completely destroyed.

According to fire department officials, the fire broke out inside the D’Amigos Restaurant and Bar, a one-story building located at 12 East Gun Hill Road, at 1.27 a.m. The fire quickly spread to two adjacent stores, P & S Wigs and Jewelry at 14 East Gun Hill and a beauty supply shop at 10 East Gun Hill Road. All three stores were gutted.

The FDNY used a two-alarm response of 108 members from 25 units. The fire was brought under control at 3:02 a.m., and three firefighters suffered various injuries and were transported to area hospitals. The severity of their injuries is not yet known.

An official from the FDNY said Thursday, “The cause of the fire is under investigation.”

The unidentified owner of the beauty supply shop was observed walking through the shop rubble and surveying the damage early Thursday. She declined to comment.

One resident of the block said that the P & S Wigs and Jewelry shop had just been sold. “They just took it over not three weeks ago and they didn’t have insurance,” the resident said.

 

Norwood News has attempted to reach out to the various business owners for comment.

Local resident, Judy Noy, lives on DeKalb Avenue close to where the fire took place. “I was up last night and smelled the fire odor which was coming through my vents and lasted a while, and I live at least a block away!” she said. Referring to the time of the incident, she said, “It was about 3 a.m.”
