Norwood News to Host 11th Council District Debate on Aug. 1

Save the date! The Norwood News will be hosting a debate among candidates looking to replace term-limited Oliver Koppell in the 11th Council District, which includes Norwood, Bedford Park, Woodlawn, Wakefield, Kingsbridge, Kingsbridge Heights and Riverdale.

Find out what the candidates stand for and how they would represent you in city government. Ask them the questions you want answered.

It will be at the Sister Annunciata Bethel Senior Center (also known as the Bedford Park Senior Center), 243 E. 204th St. on Thursday, Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend. Campaign signs and materials will not be permitted inside.

The Norwood News will be moderating the debate, but we want to hear from you about what questions you want the candidates  answering. You can email us your questions at norwoodnews@norwoodnews.org, Tweet us questions to @norwoodnews or post questions on our Facebook page. We’ll also be accepting written questions submitted during the debate.

The 11th District candidates who submitted the required petition signatures include Andrew Cohen, Cliff Stanton and Cheryl Keeling have all been invited to participate. (Keeling is fighting a challenge to her petition.)

Stay tuned for more details.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students. When a Bedford Park resident, asked Ms. Cheryl Keeling , a candidate at a recent Lehman College Debate , if she believed Riverdale’s higher voting rates entitled its residents to more services:

“Riverdale sends 15,000 people to the polls. The other Assembly districts combined send 3,000. If that’s the best you can do, that’s the best you deserve,”. Northwest Bronx (NWBx) Democrats says “Please come and support your neighborhood”
