Dozens of residents from Norwood and Bedford Park of all ages gathered at the Williamsbridge Oval Track and Field in Norwood on July 10 to watch the Pixar movie, “Finding Nemo,” kicking off the “Movies in the Park after Dark” summer series which will be running in the Oval throughout the summer.

The series is hosted by District 11 City Council Member Eric Dinowitz, who broadly represents the northwest Bronx, in collaboration with Jerome Gun Hill Business Improvement District (BID) and Mosholu Preservation Corporation (MPC). The movie line-up for the rest of the summer includes “Space Jam,” which will be screened on July 24, followed by “Kung Fu Panda” on Aug. 5, and “Encanto” on Aug.19.

Entry to all movies is free and begins at 8 p.m. Pre-movie activities begin at 7 p.m. and include free ice cream and face-painting.
Dinowitz said of the first film screening, “When I was a teenager, I remember heading to Bryant Park in the summer evenings for their movie nights and wondering, ‘Why can’t we have this in The Bronx?’ The answer to that is we absolutely CAN have this in The Bronx! Two years ago, I worked with the Van Cortlandt Park Alliance and Altice to create the first summertime movie series that could be enjoyed by all.”

The councilman continued “I am proud to say that we have expanded this series to Williamsbridge Oval with the help of fantastic partners such as the Mosholu Preservation Corporation, the Jerome Gun Hill BID, and Montefiore Medical Center.”
He added, “By holding our movies series throughout our local parks, we are ensuring that folks of all ages and from all over the district have easy access to this recreation in beautiful, accessible locations. The Williamsbridge Oval is a beloved spot to many, so it is especially rewarding to host the series in a place that serves as a community oasis.”

One parent at the screening told Norwood News it was a great environment for children. “It’s always nice to give the kids something to do that is outdoors,” she said. “You just look around and all the kids are running around, smiling; it’s great!”
Another parent said her family plans on attending all four nights of the movie night series. “It’s free, the weather is nice, and everyone here seems to like it a lot. Me and my kids will definitely come back all summer!”

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts.
