The NYPD has confirmed that a 56-year-old man has died following a car accident in Norwood.

On Sunday, Jan. 2, at approximately 1.22 a.m., police responded to a 911 call of a pedestrian struck by an FDNY ambulance at the intersection of Dekalb Avenue and E. Gun Hill Road in Norwood, in the 52nd precinct.

Upon arrival, officers discovered an unconscious and unresponsive 56-year-old man lying on the roadway. The victim was transported via EMS to North Central Bronx hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The vehicle remained at the scene. Police said no criminality is suspected at this time.

The preliminary investigation determined that an ambulance had been traveling northbound on Dekalb Avenue, approaching E. Gun Hill Road and as the driver was making a left-hand turn onto E. Gun Hill Road, a pedestrian attempted to cross E. Gun Hill Road at the same time and was struck by the ambulance, causing him to fall to the pavement. The investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad.

The identity of the deceased is pending proper family notification.
