Neighborhood Notes: Free Flu Shots, Resource Fairs, and More

Free Flu Shots
Free flu shots will be available on Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Vladeck Hall, 74 Van Cortlandt Pk. So. Participants should bring their insurance card, be at least 18 years of age or older and cannot be allergic to eggs. Residents must contact the office of Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz at (718) 796-5345 to be guaranteed a flu shot.

College Fair
The 10th annual College Access Fair will be held on Oct. 21 from 11 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. at Fordham University’s Rose Hill Campus, 441 E. Fordham Road with representatives from more than 60 colleges and universities. Topics range from campus life, careers with black college alumni, financial aid, and preparing for college. The event is free. For more information and to sign up, go to www.cicu.org. Participating students are eligible to apply for a $1,000 scholarship.

NYPD/Community Contest
Share stories about the positive bonds between NYPD and communities through photos, videos, and other media in a contest that helps identify ways neighborhoods can be improved. Finalists will be announced in November. The deadline to submit an entry is Oct. 27. Vote for your favorite submission at www.MyNYCStory.org/bronx.

Health Insurance Workshop
A free health insurance workshop will be held on Oct. 25 at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln at 234 E. 149th St. from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for those who need help understanding the open enrollment period. Tenant Resource Fair
Representatives from the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development will be available to help residents with housing issues at a Tenant Resource Fair on Oct. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the East Dining Room at Lehman College, 250 Bedford Park Blvd., W. Learn about tenant associations, rent protection for low-income senior and disabled tenants, HPD housing lotteries, eviction protections, and more. Improving Seniors Lives
The New York City Department for the Aging will host a public hearing on Oct. 18 from 10 a.m. to noon at Casa Boricua Senior Center, 910 E. 172nd St., seeking recommendations and comments that would improve the lives of senior citizens living in New York City. The information will be included in the agency’s Annual Plan Summary.

Shelter Town Hall Mtg.
A public town hall forum on the Fordham Landing affordable housing/homeless shelter set to open in December will take place Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church, The Father Smith Center, 2345 University Ave.

Cleanup Volunteers Wanted
The Bedford Mosholu Community Association seeks volunteers for annual cleanup of Mosholu Parkway on Oct. 28 beginning at 10 a.m. Volunteers will meet at the pump station on Webster Avenue and Mosholu Parkway. Those interested can email bedfordmosholu@verizon.net. 

Job Recruitment Events
Pop-up recruitment events where job seekers can meet with potential employers will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as follows: Bronx Library Center, 310 E. The Jerome-Gun Hill Business Improvement District is conducting a survey through November to determine what stores are needed for the neighborhood business strip on Jerome Avenue between Mosholu Parkway and East Gun Hill Road and East Gun Hill Road between Jerome and Webster avenues. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts.
