NCBH Looks For Rape Crisis Volunteers

by David Cruz

The trend of sexual assaults in the Bronx remains steady since last year, but North Central Bronx Hospital looks to crush those numbers. And it wants your help.

The city-funded hospital in Norwood is looking for volunteers for its Sexual Assault Treatment Program (SATP), a program that adds a layer of comfort for rape and sexual assault victims. Volunteers will undergo a 40-hour training session spread out in September and October.

Following training, volunteers will join a team of advocates who will offer survivors a well-rounded guide to assist them in their trauma. Survivors can also benefit from other services that include counseling, accompaniment during doctor and law enforcement visits and other personal needs.

Rape and sexual assault crimes happen in virtually every precinct in the Bronx. So far this year, there have been a total of 143 rapes and 264 misdemeanor sex crimes throughout all eleven Bronx precincts. In 2013, there were 133 rapes and 270 misdemeanor sex crimes in the same period.

Volunteers must commit to three shifts per month, Monday through Friday, for a minimum of one year. To obtain an application, contact SATP Advocate Coordinator, Debbie Hayashi, LCSW, at 718-519-4788. The deadline is Friday, July 25.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
