Trees are downed on Kingsbridge Road and Bailey Avenue in Kingsbridge Heights, just outside the border of the Marble Hill section of the Bronx, on Thursday, Sept. 2, at 8.45 a.m. People passing the scene were heard saying, “Oh my God, Oh my God!” on seeing the cars and downed trees and expressed their hope that the occupants got out alive.

The New York bureau of the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a wind advisory, effective Friday, Oct. 29, from 2 p.m. through Saturday, Oct. 30 at 6 a.m.

East winds of between 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph are expected in across New York in Manhattan, Southern Nassau, Staten Island, The Bronx, Northern Nassau, Northern Queens, Southern Queens and Brooklyn.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may
result. Due to recent rainfall and a saturated ground, there may be a few uprooted trees.

NWS advises to use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.

The NYC Ferry Rockaway route service in Queens has since been suspended, according to a City alert, due to extremely high winds. New Yorkers are encouraged to stay up to date on the latest ferry service schedule at www.ferry.nyc/service-alerts.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
