The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory on Saturday, May 7, at 12:43 p.m. which will remain in effect until 2.45 p.m.

Urban and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected in parts of northeast New Jersey and southeast New York, including the northeast New Jersey counties of Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union and the southeast New York counties of Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), New York (Manhattan), Queens and Richmond (Staten Island).

Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas is expected. The doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated heavy rain, causing urban and small stream flooding. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen already. Additional rainfall amounts of half an inch to 1 inch are expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding.

Some specific locations which will experience flooding include Newark, Jersey City, Jamaica, Paterson, Elizabeth, Flatbush, Flushing, Passaic, Bayonne, Wayne, Mott Haven, Hoboken, Plainfield, Bloomfield, East Tremont, Hackensack, Linden, Orange, Bergenfield and Paramus.

Go to http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood for details on how to stay safe during the floods. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. New Yorkers are requested to be aware of their surroundings, turn around and not drive on flooded roads.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
