The Bardekova Ensemble, founded in the Bronx more than 30 years ago, continues its melodious quest to bring free concerts to Bronx residents, regardless of age or socio-economic status, with two programs at landmark Bronx venues this week.
On Sunday July 12, the group’s quintet, composed entirely of wind instrument performers, filled the majestic Woolworth Chapel at Woodlawn Cemetery with the classical sounds of groundbreaking European composers Mozart and Rossini. Guests also enjoyed the musical strains of George M. Cohan and Irving Berlin, two famed American composers whose final resting places are on the Woodlawn grounds. Breezes wafted in to cool the ornate space filled with audience members enjoying the ensemble’s repertoire. Ellen Bardekoff, a school teacher and oboist, leads the ensemble. She was driven to form the troupe after realizing Bronxites often forego a trip to Manhattan to hear classical music.
On Wednesday, July 15 at 2 p.m., the ensemble will offer another free performance at the Poe Visitor Center, 2640 Grand Concourse, a contemporary space that will provide a welcome indoor respite on a summer day. All are welcome to attend. The ensemble will be back at Woodlawn on September 20, with another live performance for the community.
Performances by the Bardekova Ensemble are funded by Bronx Council on the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, Greater NY Arts Development Fund, The Music Performance Trust Fund of the American Federation of Musicians, and private donations.
