A young motorcyclist was killed this morning after crashing on Mosholu Parkway in a tunnel that runs underneath Jerome Avenue. The crash site was just a short distance away from where a young pedestrian was struck and killed in a hit-and-run incident back in December.
Officers from the 52nd precinct arrived on the scene on Mosholu Parkway, just after 8 a.m., and discovered the mortally-wounded motorcyclist who was identified as Justin Bravo, a 28-year-old resident of North Babylon, NY. Police say he was transported to Montefiore Medical Center where died on arrival.
Few details are available the this time, but police say Bravo, described as a white male, was traveling north-bound when he struck the concrete overpass (that runs under Jerome Avenue) and was thrown into the street. A police source not authorized to speak to the press said the victim was apparently thrown under the wheels of an oncoming SUV.
The accident is the latest in a series of crashes in the immediate area that has claimed the life of a victim or has left a person in serious condition.
In late December, Josbel Rivera, 23, was killed by a hit-and-run driver less than 500-feet from where Bravo was killed under the Jerome Avenue underpass on Mosholu Parkway. Police are still looking for the driver eventually abandoned and torch the stolen vehicle in Kingsbridge.
In mid-February, two men were critically injured when their car plowed into a pillar under the elevated subway on Jerome Avenue. The last NYPD update said they were both fighting for their lives.
Also in February, taxi driver Kwame Antwi, 64, was headed for a pick-up when he apparently had a heart attack and slammed into a pole at Jerome Avenue and East Gun Hill Road. He died a short time later. It’s unclear whether he died from the heart attack or the crash.
I’ve lived in this neighborhood for 32 years and this particular spot under the overpass has always been known as dead man’s curve. Cars rush into from either direction, not realizing how hard the curve is and then have to slam on the breaks.I’ve have my share of people behind me flashing their lights at night and/or honking because they think I’m going to slowly but I KNOW that is how this curve has to be negotiated. How sad. Also how frightening. I went north through that same curve not 5-10 minutes before this happened.

I know that many people are feeling the pain of a loss of a wonderful human being. However, to the motorcycle owners, let’s slow down on the road. Particularly all those motorcyclist that are in competition with themselves and are risking their lives and other people’s lives as they drive recklessly and irresponsibly. I say this because I am a driver and I see how cyclists and motorcyclist take the road as if they are untouchable. As you can see, we are not safe in our own cars let alone a motorcycle, which has no protection except for a mere helmet. The reason why I am expressing this concern, is because I have known too many good and awesome people just like Mr. Bravo that have lost their lives in accidents like this. So, please to all that own or want a motorcycle be a responsible driver and don’t be another statistic……
Justin we will miss you but never forget you, you were a wonderfull man and will always be remembered that way. Love you
He was going 30mph. Car driver smacked into him and fled.
