An early Wednesday morning crash in the Soundview section of the Bronx has claimed the life of a 25-year-old motorcyclist from Patterson Houses.

According to NYPD, officers from the 43rd precinct responded to a 911 call about a crash involving an automobile and a motorcycle at Bruckner Boulevard and White Plains Road, at 4:43 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20, 2020.

A brief statement issued by NYPD read in part, “Upon arrival [at the scene], officers observed an unconscious and unresponsive 25-year-old male motorcyclist, lying on the roadway with severe trauma about the body. EMS responded to the location and transported the victim to New York City’s Jacobi Hospital, where he [the victim] was pronounced deceased”.

Following a two vehicle collision involving a car and a motorcycle in the early morning of Wednesday, May 20, 2020, a 2019 Toyota Corolla (pictured) had extensive damage to the front-end, windshield and body and had to be removed by a tow truck from White Plains Road and Bruckner Boulevard in Soundview.

The statement continued, “Further investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad (CIS) determined a 43-year-old female was operating a 2019 Toyota Corolla traveling westbound on Bruckner Boulevard when she inadvertently struck (rear-ended) the 25-year-old male’s Yamaha motorcycle. The motorcyclist fell to the roadway, before being run over and dragged by the woman’s vehicle for a still-undetermined distance before coming to a stop”.

Investigators said that the female driver, whose name has not been made public, remained at the scene of the incident and was questioned by police, before being released. Officials could not immediately say if any summonses were issued.

After notifying his family, police later identified the victim as Simon Tavarez, 25, of Morris Avenue, a resident of the Patterson Houses, located in The Hub section of the borough.

The crash comes on the heels of an announcement on May 12, 2020 by Department of Transportation Commissioner, Polly Trottenberg, that the city had gone 58 straight days without a fatal vehicular accident anywhere in the five boroughs, the longest such period since the city began collecting such data in 1983.

Trottenberg credited the recent success in low fatal vehicular accidents to the stay-at-home “PAUSE” order issued 51 days ago by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in an effort to curtail the spread of the coronavirus.

Officials at the NYPD said the investigation into the crash continues.
