Many people crossing Mosholu Parkway North on this morning were fuming over the unusual view of several benches ripped off from the ground, left alone on the massive lawn without warning.

At least five benches flanking the scenic roadway in Bedford Park/Norwood were slashed in half, the debris leftover, with many residents scratching their heads over what caused this.

A group of folks huddled around one bench just on a hilltop, with piles of concrete, wood and shavings left over. “Did they break it off purposely?” asked a man pushing a stroller.

“I was out here last night and that was intact,” said one woman living just across the street from the slashed benches, which surrounds several ten-story buildings.

“It looks well-organized, though. It must have been done by someone who does constructions,” guessed another neighbor.

The removal of the benches is actual work commissioned by the city Parks Department, which has oversight of the parkway. A spokesman said “Parks is currently in the process of repairing damaged benches at this location.”

“There was nothing wrong with the benches,” said Carmen Corrigan, a neighbor across the street from the lush lawn. “I hope they replace them.”

Corrigan witnessed crews with sledgehammers taking the benches “tearing them apart” Thursday morning.

“They drove away after they destroyed two benches,” said Corrigan. “Out of five they left only two. And they said that’s what they’re going to do all over the parkway.”

The city Parks Department has also marked several benches of the parkway with an orange line, an indication the bench needs some work.
