Police have opened a murder investigation following the shooting of a 38-year-old man in the head inside a car in Morrisania.
On Sunday, July 25, at approximately 2.28 a.m. police responded to a call regarding a person who had been shot opposite 589 East 164th Street in Morrisania, in the 42nd precinct. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a 38-year-old man had been seated in the passenger’s seat of his friend’s Honda when an unknown man approached, and started shooting into the vehicle, striking the victim in the head.
The victim was transported to Lincoln Hospital by private means and was pronounced deceased. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. The name of the deceased is Anthony Rios, 38, of Bryant Ave, just north of the Bronx’s Foxhurst neighborhood.
As reported, an anti-gun violence vigil was just recently held in Morrisania on Saturday, Saturday, July 17, following the shooting of Billy Wynn, 25, two days earlier on Thursday, July 15. Wynn was shot and killed outside the front door of his home at 1150 College Avenue, one of 28 buildings that make up NYCHA’s Claremont Consolidated housing complex. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Democratic mayoral nominee, Eric Adams, and District 16 City Councilwoman and Democratic nominee for Bronx Borough President spoke at the vigil and committed to supporting the work of the various Cure Violence programs in efforts to address the plague of gun violence.
A separate anti-gun violence rally had also recently been held in Belmont on Wednesday, July 14, as reported, following the shooting of 13-year-old Jaryan Elliot on Sunday, July 11. Jaryan died from his injuries.
As of July 24, murder rates in the Bronx are up 40 percent compared to the same period last year, shooting incidents are up 62 percent and shooting victims are up 55 percent.
