An elderly man is reported to be fighting for his life after being struck by an MTA express bus in the Morris Park section of the Bronx on a dark, rainy evening amid poor visibility.

Police and fire officials confirmed that a 78-year-old male victim was crossing Morris Park Avenue at the Radcliff Avenue junction at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29 when he was struck by a moving bus. The elderly man was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center, where he is listed as being in critical condition.

Officers from the 49th precinct shut down Morris Park Avenue between Bogart Avenue and Colden Avenue until late into the night as they carried out their investigation into the crash. Initial reports were that the driver of the MTA BX-10 express bus remained at the scene following the incident, and that he had the right of way with a green light displaying at the time of the collision. Heavy rain had been reported in the area throughout the day.

The New York Daily News later identified the victim as George Dingfelder, 78, a friend of music legend and former Beatle, John Lennon.

Ironically, the site of the crash comes as Morris Park residents brace for the five-year anniversary of another horrific Halloween-day crash in 2015, when an out-of-control vehicle plowed into a group of trick-or-treaters also at the intersection of Radliff Avenue and Morris Park Avenue.

That particular crash killed 65-year-old Luis Perez, his 9-year-old grand-daughter, Nyanna Aquil, and Kristian Leka, 24. Leka died after successfully pushing his sister Fiona out of the way moments before the crash.

On Oct. 5, 2018, the driver involved in the 2015 incident, Howard Unger, 59, was sentenced to between four and twelve years in prison after it was determined he had been driving without taking seizure medication.

Unger was found guilty of three counts of second degree manslaughter, and making false statements.

I’m sorry but a lot of people cross Morris Park Avenue without looking to see if there is a car coming. Then again however, buses speed like there is no tomorrow.
My prayers are with the elderly man and his family.
