November is American Diabetes Month, a time to raise awareness about the disease and its complications, if left untreated.
In New York State an estimated 1.6 million people, or 10.5 percent of the adult population, have diabetes, and the incidence is 16 percent in The Bronx.
Throughout November, Montefiore Medical Center is running a series of events and activities to educate and encourage Bronx residents to manage their diabetes.
Montefiore held its kick-off event marking the month at Einstein College of Medicine, located at 1300 Morris Park Avenue in the Morris Park section of The Bronx, on Friday, Nov. 4.
Present on the day were Shivani Agarwal, MD, MPH, Jill Crandall, MD, Hanna Lee, MD, Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), Edwin Torres, Ph.D., NP, State Sen. Robert Jackson (S.D. 31), City Council Member Eric Dinowitz (District 11), and State Sen. Jamaal T. Bailey (S.D. 36).
