The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) recently opened the first hospital-based, outpatient physical and occupational therapy gym in the Bronx for children aged 3 to 11. The new space will accommodate up to 9,000 patient visits per year and will serve children with a range of rehabilitation needs, including physical therapy after orthopedic injuries, and occupational therapy for children with complex medical conditions.
CHAM officials said CHAM pediatric therapists and physicians use their expertise in movement and collaborate with children and their families to enhance a child’s ability to function independently and participate actively in home, school, and community environments.
They said pediatric rehabilitation therapy promotes independence, facilitates motor development and function, improves strength and endurance, enhances learning opportunities, and eases challenges with daily caregiving.
According to officials at the Norwood-based hospital, located at 3415 Bainbridge Avenue, the new CHAM space addresses a great need in The Bronx. Prior to the creation of the service at CHAM, children in need of PT and OT services had to leave the borough to access care or go to shared facilities with adult rehabilitation patients. “Now, Bronx children can access the specialized therapies and treatments close to home in a space dedicated to children,” they said.
