New York City Mayor Eric Adams released a security-related statement on Thursday, Dec. 7, following reports of shots being fired near Temple Israel in Albany, N.Y., and the impact of the incident on New York City.
“I have been briefed on the situation at Temple Israel in Albany, which is under investigation by federal and state law enforcement and has no known nexus to New York City at this time,” Adams said. “As our Jewish neighbors begin to celebrate Hanukkah this evening, the New York City Police Department was already and remains on heightened alert to ensure the safety of New Yorkers.”
He concluded, “With the start of the holiday, the NYPD is implementing pre-planned measures for elevated security around public Menorah displays and at all lighting events. Everyone in our city has a right to practice their faith in peace, and we will ensure that right is protected.”
Law enforcement officials have been on high alert since Oct. 7, following the Hamas attacks on Southern Israel resulting in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis, the kidnapping of around 240 Israeli hostages, including children, some of whom have since been released, and the escalating war between Hamas and Israel in Gaza. To date, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, over 15,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli air strikes and a subsequent ground invasion.
The mayor convened a round table on Monday, Nov. 13, with Jewish, Muslim, and Christian faith and community leaders in the wake of a recent spike in hate crimes across both the Jewish and Muslim communities since Oct. 7.
As reported, U.S. Sen. Kristen Gillibrand delivered remarks at a special session convened by Israel’s Permanent Mission to the UN on Monday, Dec. 4. At the session, Gillibrand and other women’s rights experts denounced the use of rape and sexual violence committed by Hamas terrorists against Israeli women and girls.
