[Update: Evander Childs won it’s game against John Browne tonight, 71-58 to advance to the Elite 8. They will play at home on Thursday against either Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology or McKee/Staten Island Tech.]

The top 16 public school teams in the boy’s and girl’s varsity basketball A Division playoffs are competing this week to advance to the next round and only a few Bronx teams remain in the hunt for a city championship.

Both the boy’s and girl’s teams from Evander Childs Campus are in the Sweet 16. The boys have demonstrated they are deserving of their number two seed in the tournament, breezing through the first rounds of the Public School Athletic League tournament, including a dominating performance against Norman Thomas (80-58) last Thursday (see photos from the game above).

Despite losing in the first round of the Bronx Boro playoffs, the Tigers are looking good as they head into their duel against John Browne tonight at home at 5 p.m. Morris Campus plays at home against Midwood tonight at 5 p.m. as well.

The Evander girls, seeded 8th, play at home against 24th-seeded International Studies High School from Staten Island tomorrow at 5 p.m. Two other Bronx girl’s teams, Clinton (11) and Mott Haven (6th) face off tomorrow at 5 p.m. at Mott Haven.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
