Kicking off at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, local community members will host a Three Kings Day children’s bike giveaway and community celebration at 5237 Broadway, (between 225th Street and 228th Street) in the Marble Hill section of The Bronx. According to the organizers, volunteer bike mechanics spent 555 hours over the past two months repairing and restoring dozens of bikes previously rescued from a former bike repair shop in Spanish Harlem in October.

Approximately 30 bikes will be distributed to children in a raffle to be held at Friday’s event, marking the launch of the Bronx Bike Collective, a volunteer mutual aid project focused on bringing more bikes to The Bronx. Volunteers will also distribute fresh produce, and host a free store where community members can select items ranging from clothing, household goods, books, and toys.

Kingsbridge Unidos, a volunteer-run mutual aid group rooted in service and care for the community, founded by Jessica Altagracia Woolford, former candidate for Assembly District 81, and Cash Cow NYC, a Bronx-based clothing brand, founded by Haramritjot Singh, are hosting the event, with support from New York State Sen. Gustavo Rivera (S.D. 33), D’Arrrigo New York, Art for AID, and the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) who will be providing helmets to children.

Limited street parking is available along Broadway and 228th Street.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
