A 27-year-old male moped driver has died following a motor vehicle accident on Sunday, Sept. 17, at Southern Boulevard and Bronx River Parkway, police said.

An NYPD spokesperson said police responded to a 911 call regarding a vehicle collision at around 00.10 a.m. The spokesperson said that further investigation by the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad determined that the man was driving a 2023 Jiaju, gas-powered moped eastbound on Southern Boulevard when he failed to navigate a curve on the roadway, striking a concrete barrier on the south side of the roadway which caused him to be ejected from the moped.

“EMS responded and transported the aided male to NYC Health and Hospitals/Jacobi where he was pronounced deceased,” the spokesperson said. “There are no arrests and this incident is under investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.”

The deceased has been identified as Christopher Vatran from the Allerton section of The Bronx.

When collisions occur, the NYPD handles all criminal aspects of the investigation, while NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) reviews the street design at the locations of such accidents.
