A male pedestrian has died after being hit by a car while attempting to cross the Major Deegan Expressway, police said.

Police said that on Tuesday, June 4, at around 2.37 a.m., officers from the 46th Precinct responded to a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian who had been struck on the southbound Major Deegan Expressway at West Tremont Avenue.

“Upon arrival, officers observed an adult male pedestrian lying on the roadway, with trauma about the body,” a police spokesperson said. “EMS responded to the location and pronounced the male deceased at the scene.”

The spokesperson said that further investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad (CIS) determined that the man had been attempting to cross the Major Deegan Expressway from the east side to the west side when he was struck by a 2015 Toyota Avalon, driven by a 65-year-old man who was traveling southbound on the Major Deegan Expressway at the West Tremont Avenue overpass.

They said the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was not injured. “There are no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing,” the spokesperson said.

The identity of the deceased is pending proper family notification.

With collision investigations, the NYPD handles all criminal aspects of the investigation, while NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) reviews the street design at the locations of such crashes.
