Lehman College Speaker Series Takes Stage Tonight

Lehman College School of Arts and Humanities’ fall 2011 speaker series will open with Spanish flair. The series is set to begin tonight with two speakers who will do much more than speak. Francisco Roldan and Thelma Ithier-Sterling will perform, “Music by Spanish and Latin American Composers” as part of the college’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The performance is at 6 p.m. in Recital Hall in the Music Building.

Next week’s speaker is a treat for techies. Sound and video artist Ben Houge talks about the place of video games and digital art on Tuesday Oct. 18 at 2 pm.

Lehman will host poet, author, and playwright Sonia Sanchez on Nov. 3 at 12:30 p.m. The author of books of poetry like Morning Haiku will hold a poetry reading and discussion.

Environmental artists John Bertles and Nathana Hetherington will use a combination of mediums for their piece, “It’s So Easy Being Green: Music and Science in Education,” on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.

Poets David Hernandez and Simon Muench will hold a poetry reading on Nov 17 at 3 p.m. as the last event in the series for the year. Hernandez won a 2011 NEA Literature Fellowship in Poetry.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
