Dear Fellow Readers,
The latest edition of the Norwood News is out, though this time it’s our traditional one-month edition. That’s right, one month. But it’s packed with plenty of news that will get you talking for the month so let’s start with page one.
Our epic page one story focuses on several political rumblings and races heading into the September primary. For the Bronx, that’s usually a time where Democrats will decide who will want to be their general election nominee. You’ll hear from the candidates in the closely watched 34th Senate District and the lone nominee for the 80th Assembly District. You’ll also hear from two prospective nominees to a seat that remains vacant. Read the story to learn more.
Inside the paper you’ll find our editorial on the hole the layoffs at the New York Daily News can have on local coverage here in the Bronx. The bottom line: it’s not good. Our Inquiring Photographer takes a look at what Bronx readers think of the loss at the Daily News.
In the neighborhood you’ll read about the reopening of Whalen Park and the great fanfare behind it. You’ll also read a story on a sweet gardener who’s trying to expand it to his building’s roof. It’s a cute story from Christy Rae Ammons. Sliding to more serious stories we chronicle conditions at NYCHA’s Bailey Houses once again. Only this time we delve into the mental health impact. We also have brief stories on the unveiling of dockless bikes, a new supportive housing site in University Heights, and a plan to increase tenant protections.
We also have the regular features–Out & About, Neighborhood Notes, Health Check, and Inquiring Photographer, which we mentioned–all aimed to make you an informed Bronx reader.
So that’s it! Check out the latest edition of the Norwood News. Be sure to send me comments at dcruz@norwoodnews.org. While the paper takes a hiatus the website won’t. Be sure to check out stories here on www.norwoodnews.org.
Til’ Next Time!
