The fifth edition of the Norwood News, primarily covering the northwest Bronx, is out with plenty of community news. We have 16 pages full of news for you to share with your friends, family, and make you the smartest person in the room!
We begin with page one and a quality of life inconvenience that is being addressed: loud parties and spurts of violence at Devoe Park in University Heights. Reporter Niall Ridgley reports that it’s the off season now, and Councilman Fernando Cabrera has ordered gates to be installed at nine of the park’s entrances. Hear what residents have to say about the park and how wild things can get there. Worth a read.
Turning to inside-the-cover stories, we have a piece from reporter Mary Mellon recapping Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.’s latest State of the Borough speech that touched on accomplishments and needs for a borough Diaz calls transformative. Taking a couple shots at the city and federal governments, one would think that Diaz has his sights set on higher office. It’s a wait-and-see scenario. For now, check out his speech here.
We then have two very special reports: through a fellowship grant from the Marguerite Casey Foundation, the Norwood News has drafted a series on housing called “Housing Matters”, which tackles the many housing issues plauging the Bronx. Check out this first, near 3,000-word piece on the spoken and unspoken policies on the Jerome Avenue rezoning proposal. The Norwood News would like to once again thank the Marguerite Casey Foundation for awarding the paper this grant to continue our work.
Turning from housing to food insecurity, the Norwood News has once again partnered with WFUV Radio and BronxNet Television to present another series, “The Bronx Food Fight”, this time focusing on food inequities around the Bronx. WFUV reporter Theresa Schliep looks at so-called “time poverty” and why it’s detrimental to one’s health. Definitely worth a read.
Of course, we have the usual staples–Inquiring Photographer, Neighborhood Notes, and Out & About–all intended to keep you informed over the next few weeks (Health Check took a break this time, but we’ll be back!).
So spend some time looking over the latest edition of the Norwood News. I’m always open to comments, so send them to dcruz@norwoodnews.org.

To the Norwood News/ David Cruz-Editor: The Norwood news is a valuable informational asset to the Bronx community. I live at Fordham Hill, a 1118 unit co-op on Sedgewick Ave., and have been reading the Norwood News since it began circulation many years ago. Unfortunately the President of the Co-op, Myrna Calderon, has decided arbitrarily that the Norwood News cannot be distributed at the Fordham Hill Owners Co-op. She has ordered security to take copies from tables and not allow copies to be dropped off to be placed on the 9 lobby tables. Norwood news should research why Ms. Calderon is so afraid of having the Norwood News doing stories in the community. Recently she and the Vice-President of the Board went on a deceitful campaign to malign the Fordham Landing Residence by trying to incite fear in the residents of the co-op, in an effort to try to close the Residence. The vice-president lied about an incident in which she allegedly was traumatized by a resident of the Residence. After investigating the incident by the Residence Management and police the Vice-presidents allegations were exaggerated and a fabrication in an attempt to bring bad publicity to the Residence. It is totally reprehensible how the two main officers of the Fordham Hill Owners Corporation have behaved.
