Latest Edition of Norwood News is Out!

The latest edition of the Norwood News is out, serving the Bronx community with plenty of news to use. We begin with page one and the local 52nd Precinct’s efforts to squash the heroin culture that continues to sweep the borough. It’s at the precinct, serving Norwood, Bedford Park, Kingsbridge, Fordham, and University Heights where officers are noticing an uptick that’s related to the use of fentanyl, a dangerous narcotic. We delve into just what the Police Department is doing to combat this sad epidemic.

Behind the front pages you’ll find a related story on the Drug Enforcement Administration charging six Norwood residents with drug crimes. Find out how long that investigation has gone on and where.

We then shift to other issue-based stories, including a story on the lack of screened high schools that force the academically ambitious to undergo a heavy commute for four years. We also feature an opinion piece on the power affordable housing for the Bronx.

On a more lighthearted note, it’s Bronx Week! The eleven-day extravaganza showcases the borough’s strengths, and reporter Tatyana Turner reports on the newest inductees to the Bronx Walk of Fame. You can check out plenty of scheduled activities on www.ilovethebronx.com. We also feature Bronx Community College, which is celebrating 60 years as an institution that’s become something of an academic haven for many first generation Americans. Read what BCC’s president has to say on the enduring power of education.

The usual news fare is there–Inquiring Photographer tackling the ethics of NYPD body cams, Neighborhood Notes, a column of worthy services to take advantage of, and Out & About, featuring cultural listings for the Bronx. Definitely worth a stop. Can’t miss it!

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
