Latest Edition of the Norwood News is Out!
Hello fellow readers,

The latest edition of the Norwood News, covering the Norwood section of the Bronx and its surrounding communities, is out with its 19th edition of the year. We’ve crammed a variety of news in this 16-page paper so strap in!

We begin with page one and continued pressure from local Community Board 7 to have a proposed homeless shelter (just a proposal)  relocated to a different part of Norwood. Hear what parents of a school that rest diagonally across the proposed homeless shelter have to say about that.

We then turn to inside-the-cover news and a proposal to have Williamsbridge Oval Park locked at dusk to prevent any more spurts of violence. A teen was stabbed at the park’s tunnel in late August, prompting community leaders to talk with police. We also check in with the Jerome-Gun Hill Business Improvement District, which is seeing a collection of new stores opening up at the neighborhood shopping corridor. Worth a read.

We also have news items on the passing of Bedford Park stalwart Mary Vallati, the suspension of services at the Mosholu Public Library, and tips by Montefiore Health System on food cleanliness.

The paper also wraps up “The Bronx Develops” four-part series with WFUV and BronxNet. The final entry focuses on the Jerome Avenue Rezoning plan that’s been the talk of the west and southwest Bronx for three years. We offer a breakdown of the plan’s status.

As usual, we have the recurring features–Inquiring Photographer, Neighborhood Notes, and Out & About–all aiming to make you one of the smartest people in the room!

So take a look at the latest edition of the Norwood News and be sure to send comments and story ideas to me at dcruz@norwoodnews.org.

Til next time!

Norwood News

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students. As you navigate this website, please let us know if you discover any glitches or if you have any suggestions. We’d love to hear from you. Surprised that you write about this Bronx Develops Jerome plan without covering any of the opposition from businesses and community groups that has been very extensive. For shame!
