A 51-year-old woman died from her injuries after she was hit by a car while crossing the street in the Laconia section of the East Bronx following a daylight road incident involving one vehicle.
On Thursday, April 28, at approximately 12.31 p.m., police responded to a 911 call regarding a pedestrian who had been hit at the intersection of Burke Avenue and Bouck Avenue in Laconia. Upon arrival, officers observed a 51-year-old woman with trauma to the head and body.
EMS responded and transported the aided pedestrian to Jacobi Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased. A preliminary investigation by police determined that a 32-year-old man, who was driving a white Mercedes Benz, had been traveling westbound on Bouck Avenue, when he made a left turn onto Burke Avenue, hitting the pedestrian who had been crossing the street at the time.
The driver remained at the scene. The NYPD’s highway collision investigation squad is investigating the incident. The deceased was identified as Elizabeth Wolmart, 51, of Burke Avenue in the Laconia section of The Bronx.
Zavee Georges, 32, of 920 Baychester Avenue in the Co-op City section of the borough was arrested and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care. A person arrested and accused of a crime is deemed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
With collision investigation squad investigations, NYPD handles all criminal investigations, while NYC Department of Transportation reviews the street design at the locations of crashes.
