Grand Concourse was a sea of red, white, blue and a single star as tens of thousands of Bronxites filled the streets for the 27th annual Bronx Puerto Rican Day Parade. The parade spanned from East 192nd Street all the way to Van Cortlandt Avenue. Over a 150 community, political, educational and cultural groups marched in this celebration of Puerto Rican heritage and multiculturalism.
Bronx Puerto Ricans showed their pride by donning sashes, dresses and T-shirts featuring their signature flag from their native island. After the Jones-Shafran Act of 1917, Puerto Ricans were given de-facto US citizenship. Puerto Rican ethnic enclaves flourished in New York City, where the majority of these migrants settled in the Bronx. Today, Puerto Ricans make up roughly 25 percent of the borough’s population.
The parade was founded in 1987 by Angel Luis Rosado. It’s currently managed by Francisco Gonzalez.
