A police lieutenant from the 50th Precinct was hospitalized after he was assaulted by a subway rider at the 238th Street subway station in Kingsbridge.

Police said that on Saturday, Nov. 11, at around 9.45 p.m., officers responded to a radio run regarding a dispute involving a person armed with a knife at the 238th Street subway station.

An NYPD spokesperson said, “Upon arrival, officers were informed by an MTA conductor that four males, possibly armed with knives, engaged in a dispute with another group who had detrained at the 231 Street subway station.”

The spokesperson added, “During their investigation, officers gave law orders to two individuals to detrain but they refused. The individuals then began punching one [of the] officers in the head and body, causing lacerations and swelling to his left eye.”

Police said the group then fled onto the street and were later apprehended. “A knife, box cutter, and straight razor were recovered from the individuals,” the spokesperson said, adding that the lieutenant was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition.

Police said Marquise Webb, 24, of Yonkers, NY and Brian Innocent, 24, of New Rochelle, NY were later charged with assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, criminal trespass, and disorderly conduct.

On April 17, a female police officer also from the 50th Precinct was struck in the head with a bottle by a member of the public nearby on Broadway and 231st Street, also in Kingsbridge.

Four days earlier, on April 13, as reported, a man was hospitalized following a police-involved shooting on the elevated train track between the 238th Street and the 231st Street subway stations, following a stand off between police and the man. Police later said the man had been in possession of an “imitation pistol.”

Witnesses had earlier reported seeing the man on the 238th Street subway platform acting erratically, and waving the gun, which they believed was real, in front of passengers, including children.  The shooting was caught on video by a local store manager.

A person arrested and charged with a crime is deemed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
