Kingsbridge Historical Society (KHS) is appealing to the local and wider Bronx community to help support the upkeep of its headquarters, Edgehill Church, located in the Spuyten Duyvil section of The Bronx.

“It’s been an almost a year since the Church at Edgehill Church became the headquarters of the Kingsbridge Historical Society, much to the joy of the Riverdale-at-Large community and local historians,” KHS members said as part of their funding appeal.

Members said the purpose of the acquisition, at that time, was to allow it to preserve and protect the landmarked, 135-year-old church at a time when they said historical architecture had a decided target on its back in spite of community sentiment regarding its significance.

They explained that the preservation takes practical will and commitment, in addition to community sentiment. Members said some of Edgehill’s most pressing issues include not having a heating system, the fact that it takes in water during rain storms, that it badly needs a coat of paint, and that its Tiffany Studio windows need to be preserved and protected.

“Just these high priority items will require tens of thousands of dollars to address,” KHS member, Stephanie Coggins, said, adding that these items need to be fixed before Edgehill can live up to its potential as a neighborhood hub for meetings, lectures, and other cultural events. “The building needs your help before the building can help the community. So, please give what you can.”

According to the society, Edgehill is Spuyten Duyvil’s only registered historical landmark. Aside from its historical significance, members wish to preserve it for concerts, presentations, exhibits, and performances.

Those interested in donating can either visit the society’s website at https://kingsbridgehistoricalsociety.org/donate/, and which outlines various ways to donate or they can visit the KHS Go Fund Me campaign page directly. Donations are typically tax deductible, according to the society. Learn more about the Kingsbridge Historical Society on their website.

“Edgehill of KHS is a community asset, and community means you!” the members said. “Won’t you help today by donating to the KHS Go Fund Me campaign? All contributions, big and small, are appreciated and needed. Please help us turn Edgehill into a community asset for generations to come. Thank you.”

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights.
