Assembly Member George Alvarez (A.D. 78) and Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) held a Senior Night to celebrate local seniors at Caridad Kingsbridge, located at 135 West Kingsbridge Road in Kingsbridge Heights on Thursday, Oct. 26, from 5 to 9 p.m.
Espaillat represents parts of northern Manhattan and parts of the West Bronx, while Alvarez broadly represents some or all of the neighborhoods of Kingsbridge Heights, Belmont, Bedford Park, and Fordham Manor.
In addition to the assembly member, among those in attendance were Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, Council Member Oswald Feliz (C.D. 15), who represents Bedford Park, Fordham, Mount Hope, Bathgate, Belmont, East Tremont, West Farms, Van Nest, Allerton, and Olinville, Council Member Perina Sanchez (C.D. 14), who represents Morris Heights, University Heights, Fordham, Kingsbridge, Sirio and Heather Guerino of Guerinos Against Graffiti, and about 150 guests.
As reported, both the incumbent Democratic councilmembers led in the polls after poll closure on Election Night, Nov. 7.
Feliz had also recently attended the 100th birthday celebration of one of his constituents, writing, “Fun time celebrating Ms. Latorre’s 100th birthday today. She has dedicated her time to serving our community, and we were proud to celebrate today with her friends and neighbors.”
Heather Guerino, an advocate for those affected by domestic violence, said she cohosted the event.
There was dinner, music with DJ Vega, a salsa dancing concert, and an opportunity to pose for some photos with the elected officials.
Many of those we spoke to on the night said it was a beautiful evening and that they really enjoyed being outdoors, since the event was held both outdoors and indoors.
The evening’s festivities were also supported by Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, State Sen. Gustavo Rivera (S.D. 33), who broadly represents the northwest Bronx, as well as Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham Manor, Belmont and Tremont, State Sen. Robert Jackson (S.D. 31) who represents parts of Manhattan and the Bronx, Sanchez and Feliz.
Other sponsors of the event included ICNA Relief and Humana.
Alvarez later said of the night, “We had an amazing time dancing and eating! Thank you to all my colleagues who supported this event.”
Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible.
Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7.
The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts.
The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
