The shooting may have been the first for 2024 for the 50th Precinct, where the shooting occurred. Data from the NYPD shows that as of Feb. 4, there were zero year-to-date shootings in 50th Precinct, the same as last year. Data from Feb. 4 to Feb. 8 is not yet available.

The 50th Precinct broadly covers the neighborhoods of Kingsbridge, Marble Hill, Fieldston, Riverdale and Spuyten Duyvil, as well as Van Cortlandt Park, one of the largest parks in New York City. As reported (Page 7), Captain Ryan J. Pierce was recently appointed as the new commanding officer of the Precinct.

According to NYPD records, Pierce became a police officer in 2006, was promoted to sergeant in 2012, lieutenant in 2016, and captain in 2020. Over the course of his career, he has made a total of 82 arrests, 71 for misdemeanors and 11 for felonies. Pierce replaced
Capt. Filastine Srour, who is now assigned to Patrol Borough Bronx.

Unfortunately, that overview for the 50th Precinct is not reflective of the overall situation when it comes to shootings in the borough, as a whole. Year to date, there have been 24 shootings in The Bronx as of Feb. 4, according to NYPD data, up from 22 during the same period last year.
