Jessica Woolford, founder of community mutual aid group, Kingsbridge Unidos, Latanya DeVaughn, founder of Bronx Bound Books and representatives from State Sen. Alessandra Biaggi (S.D. 34) held a food and book giveaway in Kingsbridge on Friday, Oct. 29. The event took place at 4 p.m. at 824 Broadway between 238th and 239th Streets.

Together, they group delivered fresh produce, books and resources to around 100 families. DeVaughn, who started her creative mobile book venture to bring more books to kids across the Bronx, recently brought her Book Mobile to Broadway Family Plaza.

The volunteers began their day packing produce donated by D’Arrigo New York, based out of the Hunts Point Produce Market, at the Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale earlier in the morning. They then drove to the Broadway Family Plaza to drop off 80 bags of produce to families at the family shelter. Later, volunteers delivered bags of produce to tenants at a residential building on 238th and Broadway at 4 pm.

Representatives from Biaggi’s office participated in the giveaway on behalf of the lawmaker, and additional resources like cutlery and can openers were donated by Food52.

According to Woolford, Kingsbridge Unidos has delivered over 20,000 pounds of fresh produce, along with vital resources in English and Spanish, to neighbors in the community throughout the pandemic.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
