NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi announced that a candlelit vigil to commemorate all lives lost to COVID-19 will be held on Wednesday, June 17 at 7 pm at Jacobi Pedestrian Mall (adjacent to Pelham Parkway).
As of Jun. 16, 2020, according to the City’s department of health, total confirmed deaths (deaths following a positive COVID-19 laboratory test) in New York City amounted to 17,455, while probable deaths (cause of death reported as COVID-19 or equivalent, but no positive laboratory test) totaled 4,690.
The number of deaths in the City and State peaked in early May. While New York State, as a whole, has not seen a massive resurgence of COVID-19 cases or deaths since cases began to drop from those peaks in early May, other states across the country have seen a rise in cases and deaths in recent weeks.
According to The Hill, Florida, Texas and Arizona all set records this week for the highest numbers of new COVID-19 cases reported in a single day as the virus continues to spread throughout the southern United States.
In terms of the racial breakdown of fatalities in New York City, 34 percent of all deaths in the State were Hispanic, 28 percent were Black, 27 percent were White, 7 percent were Asian and 4 percent comprised other races.
Meanwhile, total cases of COVID-19 as of Jun. 16, 2020 in New York City amounted to 207,373, while hospitalizations stood at 53,609 as of the same date.
As of Jun. 15, 2020, the number of positive cases for Zip code 10467 (Allerton/Norwood/Pelham Parkway/Williamsburg) was 3,434, the second highest in the City, after Corona Queens which had 4,610 cases. The rate of fatality in this ZIP code is 298 deaths per 100,000 people according to the City’s health department.
Statewide, there have been 24,608 fatalities to date, 10,431 female, 14,168 male and 9 of unknown sex. The most affected age-groups across the State were the 70 to 79-year-olds followed by the 80 to 89-year-olds. The most common types of comorbidity statewide were hypertension together with COVID-19, and diabetes combined with COVID-19.
In the Bronx, there were 3,292 deaths from COVID-19 as of Jun.15, 2020. Across the borough, 258,512 people have been tested so far, with 46,710 testing positive. This represents about 18 percent of the population of the borough.
Statewide, excluding New York City, in terms of racial breakdown, 60 percent of those who have died to date were White, 17 percent were Black, 14 percent were Hispanic, 4 percent were Asian, and 5 percent were of unknown race.
Statewide, there were 384,575 positive cases of COVID-19 as of Jun. 15, 2020. Of that total, 50.9 percent were male, 48.5 percent were female, and for 0.6 percent, the sex was unknown.
As of Jun. 15, 2020, across the State, 3,051,778 have been tested for the virus.
