NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi North Central Bronx and its CEO, Christopher Mastromano, honored over 100 employees on May 12, who completed their certifications in LGBTQ health equity, a 7-hour, intensive training program aimed at increasing core competencies in providing LGBTQ health services.

According to hospital officials, the Jacobi campus ranks as one of the sites with the highest completion numbers for the program within the NYC Health + Hospitals health system. The campus includes eleven acute care facilities and several community health centers.

As reported last October, Jacobi announced the opening of its then-new, comprehensive Pride Health Center. It serves LGBTQ patients as they receive what was described as “high-quality, culturally competent, respectful care,” at the hospital’s “state-of-the-art facility.”

Hospital officials said at the time that the Pride Health Center, located at 1400 Pelham Parkway South in Morris Park, “provides LGBTQ-affirming care for a variety of services, including primary care, adolescent care, OB/GYN, family planning services, behavioral health, dental services, eye care, hormone therapy, testing for sexually transmitted infections and HIV, as well as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), meaning medicine taken to prevent contracting HIV, and more.” Officials added, “Social work support is also available for patients to assist with continuity of care.”

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
