This week, we asked readers for their thoughts on the Listeria outbreak linked to Boar’s Head meat products that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said has killed two people and caused 34 people to become ill, including 33 hospitalizations, across 13 states, including New York.
“They could prevent this with better safety measures. These are big factories that people are running, so you need more people doing their due diligence watching over as these products are being made, regarding safety and clearly that wasn’t done in this situation.”
Lawrence Alexander,
Parkchester
“I believe there was probably an outbreak in the factory where they have the meats. They need to investigate what happened. I’ll wait before I buy any cold cuts until they sort everything out and will probably continue to buy afterwards. There should be more government inspections at places where these meats are coming from.”
Joshua Naunan,
Parkchester
“I rarely eat cold cuts, thank God; it didn’t affect me. There could be several reasons why this happened. We won’t know until they do the investigation. They should have rules in place that will be effective and proper.”
Jose Nunez,
Bedford Park
“I regularly eat deli meat. The news of a deadly listeria outbreak linked to Boar’s Head is heartbreaking for me and millions of people. As a result, I had to change my lunch routine to avoid risking my health. This situation is very concerning. Food safety is crucial. Boar’s Head should face significant penalties.”
Kausar Mumin,
Concourse
“I have major concerns about any recall or outbreak, whether it be food or products. Both types can cause damage and / or harm. The Boar’s Head outbreak is a great concern to me because it is a deli product that I tend to choose. As this brand has increased in price over the years, and with the cost of food rising, product control for contamination needs to be much better. I am paying more for a better product.”
