On Wednesday, Oct. 28, at approximately 1:36 a.m., police responded to a 911 call regarding an unconscious person inside 1220 Seneca Avenue in Hunts Point, in the 41st precinct. Upon arrival at the location, officers observed a 66-year-old woman, unconscious and unresponsive, with trauma to the head.
EMS also responded to the location and pronounced the woman deceased at the scene. Later the same day, the woman was identified as Carmen Aponte, 66, of 1220 Seneca Avenue, Apt #4. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death but the incident has been deemed a homicide.
Steven Castro, 40, also of Seneca Avenue was arrested the same day in connection with the incident. He has been charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon. Castro had been in hospital but was finally arraigned before Judge Sherri Michels on Oct. 30. He is due back in court on Nov. 2, and has been remanded in custody in the meantime. Castro has admitted to police to striking Aponte, his mother, with a bat multiple times.

Some neighbors and residents paid tribute to Aponte on social media, upon hearing news of her death. Kathy Kat BX said, “This is so sad. She always looked out for the kids in PS48. She was a sweetheart. RIP Carmen. There’s a lot of kids that knew her which she helped, are really saddened by the news.”
She added, “RIP Carmen. The kids from PS48 will forever miss you. She just retired last year – it’s a shame that happened to her. Peace and Blessings to her family.”
